To quote a friend:
"My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60.
She's 97 today and we have no idea where she is."

Kath, consequent to this thread, I've received contacts from local Dovorians with information about previous generations, namely the Tutthill/Spear(e) related family.
The information is still incoming, and is proving extremely helpful to my family tree extension.
So once again, well done!

Re: Beresford Road in Dover, :
This road, which joins Common Lane River, is named after Admiral Charles William de la poer Beresford a famous admiral who was in his hey-day at the time the road was laid out.
He commanded the Channel Fleet in 1907. I thought the coal seam was named after the same person, but (quote):
"BERESFORD SEAM at the boring at Fredville (1905) was named after the late Mr Beresford WRIGHT, of the Butterly Company, largely interested in the coalfield"
Christian name Arthur: Perhaps it is Arthur BURR of the Colliery you were thinking about Howard? He was manager of Kent Coal Concessions Ltd. appointed 1906.

Thank you Kath for your email; unfortunately I haven't had time to go through it in detail yet- but I shall - thanks again.
Dr Beresford-Jones was my aunt's father, there is a ward at K&C hospital named after him.

Family history: the shifting secrets of our genealogies - in pictures
"Each family history is woven with hidden threads, unspoken secrets which run through genealogies from generation to generation. The historian Deborah Cohen has been delving into unseen archives to examine how attitudes to privacy have changed over the last 200 years, to explore what families have tried to hide and why. Here she charts the shifting continents of shame with portraits of lives shaped by untold stories..."

I note on the 19 Aug 2012 you were offering to look up your surname lists for Dover people. As your last posting appears to be 4th Sept 2012 I wonder if the lookup offer still stands. My interest is for my family who were in Dover 1830 - 1880. Regards Brian
