Inspired by the Roman Quay reference in another thread, I read the DDC asset register and found the Roman Painted House (or at least the ground on which it stands); didn't cotton-on before, but that explains the 'ground rent' in post 1 of course.

The RPH does need to move forward, and no one should be bigger than the project itself, this is after all OUR heritage.
It does need a lot of dosh spent on it also need to be open a lot more

Easy one to answer Stu, the man in charge sees it as his toy and won't take any help or advice. It is always closed on a Monday despite four bank holidays falling on that day during the season.

Are the terms of the lease to the RPH charity known?

It is such a shame that the visitors that come out of season do not get a chance to see this historical site.
I have always thought the RPH should be linked in some way to the museum so it could be opened on demand and better promoted.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Couldn't agree with you more, Jan.
On a broader scale, why have neither the district or town councils ever made any attempt to put together a co-ordinated marketing policy for Dover? Taking the history theme for example: one day at the castle, an overnight stay at a suitably enthusiastic local hotel, day 2 taking in perhaps RPH, the grand shaft maybe an evening lecture.
Could benefit local businesses in the hospitality and transport sectors. Wouldn't require a massive set-up or marketing budget if someone skilled in the use of social media was at the helm. Cruise market could be specifically targeted. Don't we have someone supposedly responsible for promoting tourism employed by DDC? The £375k the town council has blown on a single building project (which would probably have been dealt with through the free market anyway) could have been used much more effectively by someone with the vision and drive.

Mr Philp won't let anyone near his toy, DDC wanted to turn it into a major visitor attraction many years ago and he turned them down. As things stand it will be closed for both bank holidays in May.

Not sure letting DDC anywhere near would improve things, but something needs to change (I'm pretty sure it won't though).

Its rather a shame with the history there.
but it's in real need of major investment.
Like has been said there is no plan for when the owner moves on(if you know what I mean)
my biggest concern would be that the clerk and DTC get there grubby hands on it at this time

I don’t know why DDC haven’t handed it over to a suitable body to upgrade and promote it. After all, DDC own it and Mr Philp (as i understand the situation) is only the chairperson of a charity which has a lease on it. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
