Walked past the Roman Painted House earlier. Does it still open? It appears to be disappearing behind the buddleia.

Then there's that big building next to it. Has any one been in there? Was it last a nightclub?

The Roman Painted House Dover 28th June
"Sadly we have to delay opening once more due to very important electrical repairs.
At the moment we can't give you an opening date but we will do as soon as the repairs are finished.
As always we would like to thank you for your support."

I can't believe, despite living in East Kent all my life and Dover the last 25 years, I have never visited this. I hear it is a archaeological gem, but the poor reviews I've heard of how visitors have been treated, the state of the place and the fact when I do remember about it, it's never open, so I've never been.
Run by volunteers is always very difficult and costs are horrible at the moment and likely to get worse, but why doesn't it get the backing of a charity like English Heritage, National Trust? or even DDC?
I imagine there is a background to which I am not aware of, but it does seem a shame.

Sadly run by someone that doesn't want to work with the authorities give what happened in the early 1970s but we are now 50+ years later and such attractions should welcome any help they can get :(

In essence Brian P almost singlehandedly 'saved' the Roman Painted House from destruction by DDC and others.
Perhaps it's now time that DDC saved the same from Brian?

Shortly after it first opened all those years ago we visited with the children, at that time we found it disappointing so never bothered again.

The time for the difference's is not helping the Roman painted house which requires big investment .it can't be done with the present set up

They need to speak with DDC.I did get a dialogue going at one stage .Both sides need to forget the past and have inclusive talks going .The Trouble as I see it there are too many little quangos all seeking glory .Investment is needed in Dover but the money that comes in goes on ridiculous schemes. Why do we need to keep building travel lodges? The visitors need to stay in Dover.we have some lovely little restaurants. The area around Cherry Tree delightful.Very helpful people trading in that area.i must dash bins emptied and today I will beat vic .and put mine away .

It seems to me the big problem is one or both of the following, misguided independence or inflated self importance by those supposedly running the place.

It is correct it needs funding
But DDC hasn't treated Mr Phelps very well in past years so you can understand his lack of trust.
That said something needs to give now , the place looks so run down .

This should be a world class visitor attraction getting the sort of visitor numbers that the castle gets, unfortunately what we have is a jaded, dusty 1960's academic attraction in a shabby pundshop shed with little to recommend it to visitors.
Whose fault is this?
The blame needs to be shared between Phelps, his trustees & DDC.
Having said that it is something that could and should be saved, but I suspect at this juncture this is only possible if Phelps is no longer involved and a funder can be found to put in somewhere in the region of £5-10m to conserve & restore the murals, install high quality environmental controls in a purpose built building & provide a high quality interactive experience possibly also including part or all of the bathhouse.

1. Dorchester shows how to display a Roman town house.
2. High quality interactive experience? FFS! That's all we need, another dumbed down White Cliffs Experience de nos jours.

Indeed many places do historic buildings etc very well. What we don't want or need is lots of councillor jollies at rate payers expense to see them first in order to inform how we should do the RPH.
Why does interactive have to be "dumbed-down"?
Try talking to younger people about what they and their kids want rather than just assuming that you know best and that your "vision" is the only right one.
