17:1913508A very worrying trend is occurring, last year Russian Steelmaker Severstal and other Russian steel companies brought 13 US Coal Companies and I heard yesterday that they have brought coal stocks in Yorkshire and are interested in buying more.

19:0513519Gary why is it a problem if the Russians buy up the coal? They seem to be aiming to corner the market in energy supply, as they already supply huge amounts of gas as we know, and as I understand it they have vast coal reserves already too and oil.
As a nation we seem content to sit back, abandon all our own resources, and seem quite happy to buy supplies from foreign powers. Not the most dependable of strategic plans for the future, as we have seen from the recent Russian-Ukraine gas debacle.
By the way Gary have made your link above live. Anyone can do this...see the URL box amongst the smilies. Click this URL logo and type in between the boxes.

19:4213521PaulB I am worried for all the reason's you've put in your post, then again they might turn out to be better employers than British Coal.

20:3113525anything that russia does bothers me at the moment, they are still smarting from losing super power status.
the new chap in the white house will try to take the US away from a strong foreign policy, leaving the way open for russia to get back in.
i share gary's concern that one country has so much control over a vital resource.

10:3713577Well indeed Bush had a very beligerent policy towards the rest of the world in general, alienating vast swathes of the planet. Obama may have a chance of improving relations with many including Russia. I think its more useful for all of us to have Russia in the fold rather than outside. They are a rich resource of all sorts of stuff we need...including oliogarchs by the look of it (where would football here be without them).
As we have abandoned our own resources we need to trade with somebody to get them, Russia is the likely trading partner for years to come if all goes well.

You might be interested in a conversation I had with a mining engineer friend of mine. We were discussing, how to resume mining in Kent, his contribution was very interesting, "the thickest seams in Kent are in the St Margaret's Bay/Oxney Bottom Area, so taking into account depth of seams, new Technology and cost, a Drift from beach level (under cliffs) at St Margaret's Bay would be a definite option"

15:4413604I bet the people of St Margarets would love that,I also wonder what the Ward Cllrs have to say,as Paul Watkins is one I would like to know if he thinks it is a good or bad idea.Personally as Vic said Coal is one answer if it can be mined easily and without doing harm to the miners and the Countryside.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

09:5113709Paul seems keen to inflict horror developments on Whitfield - I am sure he would welcome a coal mine in his back yard.
Perhaps we could go the whole hog and make it St Margaret's New Town, complete with its own coal mine. A new industrial future at the Bay and the engine room of the local economy.

13:2413716Perhaps we could rebuild Burlington House there as well, they are always complaining that they can't get a decent mobile phone signal. Also an ideal spot for a couple more giant wind turbines to power it all (when the wind is blowing).

15:2713726Yes. Typical wealthy enclave, always out to ruin someone else's back yard.

17:2113745Open up the pits again and you will see England on the move again over night and if the reds do that now it would put them back in next time for 10years or more, or if the blues say they will do it if they get in then it will mean the same to them.
Coal can be our saver now.

19:2613750St Margarets as new energy hub? Coal mine, wind energy and why not throw in a nuclear power station as well?

14:5914402Whilst enjoying a few pints in our welfare club last night we were mulling over the name for possible new pit in St Margaret's Bay, most popular by far was Fowlmead Colliery , has a ring to it I think, any offers of other possible names?
