08:0141449The much talked about refurbishment on the seafront in Dover is to start soon.
There'll be resurfacing, new "wave walls" new ornamental lighting units and seating - as many of you will have seen.
From the Sea-Sports Centre to Protea House
The start date is the 8th of March and it is anticipated that work will go on until the 30th. of June.
Here's an official description of the work.
"A refurbishment of the Dover Esplanade, adjacent to Waterloo Crescent is planned. It extends from the Dover Sea Sport Centre to the "swimmers" statue.
Funding for the project has been secured from SeaChange, a central government resource aimed at regenerating coastal towns in the UK.
The design consists of three distinct features described as follows:
The Lifting Wave is a series of sculptural ramps and stairs that rise and fall to connect the beach to the Esplanade. The structure is formed with a repeated pattern of textured white pre-cast concrete units.
The Resting Wave is a sculptural retaining wall that provides sheltered spaces along the length of the Esplanade with oak benches. The structure is also formed with textured white precast concrete.
The Light Wave is a sculptural line of white columns that bring improved lighting and safety to the Esplanade. The lights, as well as providing lighting for the promenade, are to be interactive lowenergy LED lights that can be controlled to go on and off to create dynamic wave movement."
Hope it looks as good as it sounds when the job's done.
I'll be circulating 3 pdfs round with various information about this work, if any one would like to be added to my emails address groups (the emails are sent out blind, so no one will see your email address, so you can't get any scam or spam emails from them), please let me know - via email (lindenrog@aol.com)

09:0841451Thanks for that hot of the press info Roger. Didnt realise the development was starting so soon. A lot of people were lacking enthusiasm for the change initially but I think the idea warmed on many people including myself. Wasnt there a colour picture in circulation of this...if anyone has it please pop it up here as we could do with a refresher.

12:0741472Ah thats the very picture Jacqui, well done with that. Will have a look at the link a tad later. But it looks like most people are receptive to these seafront changes. Thats very often the problem isnt it...so many people object to anything and everything new, so we get bogged down with argument and dithering and never move forward.
But hopefully optimistic with this one...

14:0641476Looks good to me, except some "Jobsworth" is bound to put a "keep off the grass" sign up and stop family groups enjoying the facility as per the photo.
Hat's off to DHB for trying to improve the look of the place. Shame about the boarded up hotel.

16:4341483Though a change for the better doesn`t always work out, in this case I hope it does, and I shall be positive with this one PaulB. Better start gathering some pics, before it changes forever.

21:5041510i was under the impression that it was purely money from gordon brown to help regenerate coastal towns.
having said that money spent on the visitors centre at the castle was match funded by english heritage.
you may be right, maybe when paul w looks in he will enlighten us.

23:1341521"The scheme will cost £2m of which half will come from central government through the Sea Change programme and the remainder from partners (KCC, DDC and DHB)."
Been nice knowing you :)

23:2641522Sorry Howard & Paul but let's dispel a few myths.
Gordon Brown has no money.
English Heritage has no money.
Central Government has no money.
Nor do KCC or DDC.
What they all have is an ability to sequestrate and spend OUR money and let's not forget it !!!!!!!

14:1941567Marek yet again I am in agreement with you Dover promenade it ok the way it is, that funding could buy the moat Bulwark which is also on the front and needs a big makeover and cleaned up. The Moats Battery and the Guilford battery go back to Henry V111, if that was all clean off it would make a great site,i have been trying for over ten years to get that done .This is the last letter send to me from the D.H.B about that site.
Dear Cllr Matcham.
Many thanks for sending me the interesting paperwork in respect of the above site.I have kept copies of this and will (investigate the position further."In the event that there is any prospect of Dover Harbour Board participating in the scheme.I will contact you again.date of that letter 27.4.2004.I am still waiting.

15:2641571Don`t know how I missed putting this on here, but my father had this for many years. He lent it to the Dover Express in the early 70s to print, but I don`t know if it was. Era anyone?
