I think we can do more to market these assets, and that includes everyone being more proactive in talking up what we have to offer.

And here we have the next schedule of cruise ships, starting this Thursday 25th July when the Quest For Adventure arrives back at CT2, T/R, followed by the return of the Saga Ruby on Friday 26th at CT2, T/R.
Two cruise ships return back to Dover on Regatta day, Saturday 27th, the Saga Sapphire at CT1,T/R, & the Carnival Legend, CT2,T/R. No cruise ship on Sunday.
On Monday 29th July, the Ocean Princess returns to CT2, T/R.
On Wednesday 31st, the Braemar, CT1,T/R, & the AIDAStella, CT2, PoC.
On Thursday 1st August, the Quest for Adventure,CT1,T/R.
On Saturday 3rd August, the Ryndam, CT1,T/R.
On Sunday 4th August, the Saga Sapphire, CT1,T/R.
That's all for now folks - 23 July 2013 19:20238488Another anecdote with local (yes, local) connections is the story of the Canadian Pacific liner SS Montrose. This ship achieved some notoriety in 1910 when two passengers, the wife-murderer Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen and his mistress Ethel La Neve attempted to avoid justice by escaping to Canada. Chief Inspector Walter Dew of Scotland Yard suspected this attempt and took what was then a highly unusual step. Via Marconi he radioed all transatlantic ships giving details of the couple. Captain Henry Kendall of the Montrose responded with his suspicions of the couple who he thought were showing undue signs of affection in public ( La Neve was dressed as a boy!).
Instantly, Insp. Dew sailed for Canada (then subject to British law) on a much faster liner which overtook the Montrose, and he was waiting at Quebec to arrest Crippen, who was returned to the UK to face trial and the noose!
Interestingly, this was the first time a murderer had been apprehended with the aid of radio.
The local connection is that in 1914 the Montrose was acquired by the Admiralty to be sunk as a blockship in the Western Entrance of Dover Harbour. On 20 Dec., as a dead ship (no crew or power), she broke from her moorings on the Admiralty Pier in a high gale and floundered uncontrollably across the harbour. Despite bouncing off the inner wall of the breakwater a few times she miraculously avoided colliding with any of the numerous Royal Naval ships moored to buoys in the eastern part of the harbour. A final fluke was that Montrose exited through the Eastern Entrance and ended up with a broken back on the Goodwins.
Her place as a blockship was taken by the Spanish Prince, the final remnants of which were removed in 2010. - 23 July 2013 22:18238500Sitting in Calais having lunch today I suddenly heard a ferry sound six short and one long blast on its horn. - 24 July 2013 01:15238509Peter, at a guess I would say that she was giving a series of short blasts on her whistle to warn a yacht to clear out of the way, a fairly frequent occurrence. As you say, six shorts and a long is the General Emergency signal, maybe they accidentally pressed the button for a little too long on the last one.
As John says, Dr.Crippen was the first person to be apprehended as a result of the new fangled wireless telegraphy. He protested his innocence to the last and it seems he may have been a little unfortunate. He was a quack selling patent nostrums and the body in the cellar may have been the result of an abortion which went wrong, one of his sidelines.
The Montrose had been stripped of her superstructure and fitted with gantries. I acquired a matchbook holder some years ago engraved with the legend S.S. "Montrose", which I fondly believe to be a souvenir of same.
The Spanish Prince took her place, seen here with gantries fitted to support the anti-submarine nets strung across the Western Entrance to the other blockship Livonian on the other side.
These are a couple of rivets I was given from the Spanish Prince after the hull was removed down to the required depth. Seen sitting on a photo of her under her previous name Knight Bachelor with her bow severely damaged after hitting an iceberg.
- 24 July 2013 01:53238510The strange looking little reefer "Magellan Strait" photographed by PaulB came in yesterday. We were waiting to sail from ED3 and the Captain said "What on earth is that?" (bowdlerised) when he first saw her. As usual, the ferry movements were modified to accommodate the cargoship entering. Spirit of Britain departed by Western, the Magellan Strait entered and proceeded up the Bay out of the way accompanied by the tugs, enabling the Spirit of France to enter and berth on ED9, and us to depart by Eastern. - 24 July 2013 03:25238511That's brilliant, Ed. I'm sure you know Canadian Pacific ran another Montrose from 1922 until 1939 when she became an armed merchant cruiser and re-named HMS Forfar - only to be sunk by a U-boat in 1940.
I too would love to think your little artefact came from the earlier ship. To celebrate the arrival of the Prince of Cambridge, leading ferry operator DFDS Seaways is offering free meals to all children travelling on its Dover-Dunkirk route. It is also offering a free return crossing between Dover and Dunkirk for new parents who have babies born on the same day as Kate and Wills' new arrival.
Customers who book a single or return ferry crossing with DFDS Seaways before 31 July for travel before 23 December 2013 will receive free meals for all children in the booking aged 15 or under. Children can choose a Kids' Breakfast or Kids' Meal from the Self Service Restaurant menu absolutely free! If a return crossing is booked the free meals can be claimed on both the outbound and return crossing.
What's more families with tots who share their date of birth with the third in line to the throne are also eligible for a free return crossing on the Dover-Dunkirk route for use before the end of 2014. A perfect present to reward their busy parents with the chance to get away in either this year or next. The whole family will also receive free meals onboard during the crossings up to a value of £30 per family each way.
DFDS Seaways operates the only direct ferry route to Dunkirk and it is a short two-hour crossing, the perfect day trip destination or a great place to start journeys into Europe. Cruise Ships of Dover, by me, from Lily Publications , Isle of Man (a subsidiary of Ferry Publications).
As far as I know it's available locally at W H Smith and the Museum shop, possibly the National Trust at Langdon. Also, if you Google the details you'll find it at the big outlets (I think I have some copies at home as well).
Basically it's a collection of pictures taken by me over roughly an eight year period, supplemented by a few fascinating scanned slides taken by my friend Ken Larwood of various ships before the opening of the Cruise Terminal - real gems! - 25 July 2013 06:07238605Was shocked to hear the news overnight about The Astrid
It has run aground off Cork in southern Ireland and is destroyed in rough seas. A major air and sea rescue operation got all 30 crew members off in difficult conditions. No loss of life.. which is a relief. But alas alas the ship is doomed. 23 of those rescued were trainees from France, Ireland, UK, Netherlands and Spain.
The ship had been on its way to Cherbourg in North West France.
Crushing news this in so many ways...and.. its a real friend to us here in Dover.
This is the very same beautiful tall sailing ship we featured a short week or so ago. It moored here in the outer harbour 300 metres from yours truly's rear window for about 3 days and we featured it on the old frontpage in drawing form and in posts 703, 704, 706 etc etc on page 36...and now its gone..
