The European Imperial powers added to this by sending vast numbers to administer the colonies etc. , so the competition for the trade must have been collossal - and without air travel it all had to go by sea!

It has been a bit quiet on the seafront for the past short while...but here are a couple of shots. Both ships featured previously though and both pictures here taken at the very opposite end of the sunlight scale..one late evening yesterday, the other early morning this morning (5.30 am )
This is yesterdays picture. late friday evening and its getting to be a regular occurrence for friday evenings...the Celebrity Eclipse saunters down near channel in fading orange light. Seems to do so only on fridays but probably not every friday.
Here she is again for the last time..as we have indeed put up a similar picture before..
and now this mornings orange-ish picture..The Ryndam arriving at 5.30am.

- 21 July 2013 06:52238146Yes quite right Kevin. Shudder to think that we might not always have these great cruise ships coming. But the marketing team seem very good here in Dover and if i remember rightly there are already good booking levels for 2014. With support it will hopefully continue long after that. The cruise market as we know has mushroomed beyond all expectation...and Dover was in there swinging right from the start..
But starting with a ferry this time. My Ferry Link's Berlioz seemed to be having a bit of bother last night and took itself out of service, see her below moving over ( reversing over ) to the western arm. As the company is very thin with shipping levels, having just 2 passenger ships and one freighter, this must have been a blow.
Tis a bit of a gloomy picture I know. It was taken about ten minutes to 9PM last night. She seems to be back in the fray this morning though. Just as well for them as any upset would surely seriously hit their bottom line.
Earlier in the evening the Saga Sapphire departs. Both tugs were helping, they are just out of shot.

This was when the Prince of Wales pier had just been finished. A small station was built on the end of the POW and the liners berthed alongside the end of the pier.
Unfortunately, the Admiralty Harbour was also under construction and the Southern Breakwater was closing the gap with the Admiralty Pier extension creating dangerous currents in what was to become the Western Entrance.
There were several collisions with the staging of the Southern Breakwater culminating in the Hamburg-Amerika liner Deutschland suffering damage. Hamburg-Amerika consequently decided that Dover was no longer tenable for their transatlantic liners and pulled out. This also suited the Admiralty who were most unhappy at foreign liners using what was to become their port of refuge when completed.

Just for completeness, here is the WW2 pocket battleship Deutschland, renamed Lutzow at the outbreak of war as Hitler was concerned that national morale might be affected if a ship named Deutschland were to be sunk.

That last one got the choppy seas just right immediately outside of harbour. I never knew any of that about transatlantic liners..so there you have it, you learn something new everyday thanks to those pictures and to Johns original piece.

Earlier I saw this strange looking vessel approaching. From the distance it had a menacing look about it...so I expected some military hardware of some sort. It was only when it entered harbour I realised it was a cargo vessel, so i stripped off my helmet and flak jacket instantly for fear of looking a mite foolish ! ( well..Im in the frontline )
I couldnt see a name so looked it up on Chris T's Channel Traffic. Its the Magellan Strait. This is a first time in Dover for this one I feel sure.

- 23 July 2013 11:41238424We're very fortunate to have just come back from a fortnight's cruise to the far north of Norway aboard Ryndam, and what a fantastic time we had. Hope to go again next year. One observation I did make a mental note of was just how much more Dover has to offer as a port of call than quite a few of the places we visited: compared to Honningsvag and Hammerfest to name but two, Dover is a fantastic place to visit. I was surprised just how many Americans and Australians knew so little or nothing about the castle or town. We really do need to stop thinking we have nothing to offer our visitors!
That's not to say we can compete with the likes of Geiranger (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Tromso or Bergen ( both absolutely fantastic but shockingly expensive), but I'm very proud of our town and port and spent ages telling strangers not to go to Canterbury or Leeds Castle (the organised trips) at the expense of what we have.
