Ed's middle pictures down reminds me of this event on 31 May 2008 and what could have been a very embarrassing situation. My account is based on what I saw, what I heard on my VHF scanner and the comments made by seagoing friends who have more knowledge than I.
HMS Bulwark entered the harbour and by pumping out (or in!) lowered her stern to allow the landing craft to be launched. It seems that just at this moment one of Dover's notorious currents took the vessel which started to slowly drift towards the shore. Having expended most of the available power Bulwark was temporarily unable to counter this drift. With the first of the landing craft already heading to the beach the only thing available was the tiny harbour launch Dovorian. At this point I heard on the radio a request for the tug Dauntless to attend as a matter of urgency (this being the only tug operating at the time). As circumstances had it Dauntless was assisting the Pride of Canterbury onto her berth. You may recall that the Canterbury was operating on only one engine at that time following her grounding on the Goodwin Sands ..... therefore the tug's assistance was a necessity.
The next thing I saw was the second harbour launch, Director, hurtling out of the Western Docks to give Dovorian some assistance, and as soon as it was possible Dauntless charged over to recover the whole situation.
If anyone has a fuller or more accurate account I'd be interested to hear it, - but I dread to think what the sensationalist element of the press would have made of this had things really gone wrong!.
Quite by accident I recently found a clip on You Tube which shows the first part of what I describe.
You see the launch of the landing craft, the Dovorian initially moving into position, the arrival of the Pride of Canterbury (and the Dauntless) and in the last couple of seconds of the clip you see Director arriving on the scene. Nice to see that most people were quite oblivious to this and nothing took attention away from the Help for Heroes event.
I took a whole load of pictures from the Admiralty Pier, so I couldn't really see what was going on. However, a friend of mine got a shot from the beach just as Dauntless arrived to join the launches.
