A two master had been languishing in the wider harbour for about three days. It was sporting the flag of the USA and did not enter the marina proper..who knows why, perhaps because of charges or whathaveyou. The guy looked like a round the globe lone yachtsman type, with grizzled long haired weatherbeaten features.
As conditions got rougher and rougher yesterday, you could see the large yacht sway hither and tither, sometimes alarmingly. Then in the late afternoon it was approached by the Harbour Master, probably with due concern, as it looked as if the vessel could sink right before our eyes in the extreme conditions.
It was difficult approaching the yacht even though it was inside the relative safety of the harbour, the sea was rough and choppy etc and quite dangerous for both the chap on the Harbour Master boat and the lone sailor. The plan was clearly at this point to try and get a line on board the yacht. After several attempts they managed to get close enough to do it...
Line connected...
Then a tow to the inner reaches of the harbour and safety. If you look closely you can see the connected line below.
I bet the guys shared a few glasses of rum after this escapade..a rough oul day for sure !
PS: Gordon Bennett just noticed, there is a cruise liner in today. With a ' Severe Gale 9 ' forecast for the near channel and down towards Plymouth a ' Storm 10 ' forecast...I reckon this is surely cruising for the insane..!! ??
Certainly not for rubber legged landlubbers like me...gadzooks!
Its the Fred Olsen Black Watch.
