- 5 November 2012 17:28199615Yes as you can see from the pictures mighty rough sea's, several people along the seafront caught a soaking but were obviously not worried about getting wet judging by the screams and laughter.
- 6 November 2012 07:49199766As Jan says there the kids love playing amongst the crashing waves..they dash in and dash out trying not to get wet with screams and more screams...my daughter used to love doing it...here are some kids doing it the other day..
they dont always get away scot free though..look to the right in the pic below..there is a kid buried in all that surf !!
His mum will kill him when he gets home.
oh dear oh dear...here is a crop of the picture above..boy is that called getting wet, completely caught out..
All the rough seas are behind us now, at least for the moment anyway. Here is the scene across the harbour just a few minutes ago today...

Another item of the slightly unusual over the seafront. Dont know if anyone saw this today..from where they came I know not, but suddenly there they were around midday hovering over the business end of the harbour above the ferries..helicopter circling the balloon and clearly filming it from all angles...never a dull moment here eh....
That looks like a camera on the nose of the helicopter..

A French Balloon Team and Film Crew prepare to film scenes for a forthcoming movie about Benjamin Franklin and his interest in balloons at Edinburgh Hill. This particular balloon, F-PCAZ, is a privately owned Waymel XW-650 650m³ Gas Balloon.
Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard and American John Jeffries were the first to cross the English Channel by balloon on January 7, 1785.

All but two of the crew survived after a courageous mission mounted by the US Coastguard employing a Hercules maritime patrol aircraft and two rescue helicopters.

Ah yes I heard about the disaster that befell The Bounty. Sad about the loss of life but good that quite a few were rescued by the very brave rescue services, who were out there in the teeth of an approaching hurricane.. I'm a great fan of the famous film Mutiny on the Bounty..which featured Marlon Brando at his peak. Shame to see the ship go that way...just looks like firewood in the picture.
Speaking of the services. We had a visit from the UK Border Agency overnight. here she is moving away a few minutes ago.

and now the dying embers of the cruise business. Just when you thought all the cruise visits were behind us ( we've let the cruise thread go to sleep) this guy turned up this morning. Yes it's the familiar Black Watch and very late in the year. Fortunately conditions are super calm..passengers wiping sweat from brow with relief ! But it takes a brave soul to tackle the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay off season. Strong seaworthiness needed from the old bones...
Also..november definitely the season for dramatic sunrises in Dover..visitors could enjoy themselves here this time of year, especially if they are camera buffs. Here we have the Berlioz continuing in regular daily action despite its mishap the other week.

But worth watching out for. Dont know if it has just started running today..??
Looks goodemail: dover7@msn.com - 8 November 2012 10:15200286Yes the Dieppe Seaways (ex Moliere) has started on Dover-Calais replacing Deal Seaways (Barfleur) which has gone to Dunkerque for lay up. Things change by the minute but think the idea is that Dieppe Seaways will transfer to Dover-Dunkerque after the three D class vessels have completed their annual refits in January and the Delft Seaways will then transfer to Dover-Calais. Norman Spirit needs a long refit to bring her up to scratch and understand that Deal Seaways may stand in for her during this time, then will go back to Britanny Ferries and her original run Poole-Cherbourg. Something like that.
Re the Border Agency cutter above. If she is not showing up on AIS, then it would indeed seem eminently sensible that they have their AIS switched off. No point in telling the villains where they are. Same applies to warships when operational, and to merchant ships when transitting pirate infested areas. - 8 November 2012 19:32200378Was surprised to see the Black Watch this morning, as said summer and the cruise ship season seems way back, but hey it was a reminder of summer.

The Norman Spirit will be renamed Calais Seaways after her refit.
Pride of Dover, laid up for a year or two in Tilbury, has now been sold to the same German interests who previously bought the Renoir and Cezanne and sent them off to be scrapped. Therefore she is probably off to a beach in India soon. Four photos of SeaFrance Cezanne being scrapped at Alang can be seen eighty photos down in the link below (was renamed Western Light for the one way voyage):

Always worth looking up the ships on Dover Ferry Photos website as people don't realise the lives that they had before and after Dover. The cruise liner that started off as a frieght ship always surprises me - think it is one of the Costa ships?Been nice knowing you :) - 9 November 2012 18:50200551I think, Paul, you're referring to the Costa Allegra which sadly has recently arrived in Turkey for scrapping. Built as cargo ships in Finland in 1969, she and her sister Costa Marina were originally called Annie Johnson and Axel Johnson .
After conversion they were operated by a number of companies and the former Costa Marina now sails for a Korean operator under the name Club Harmony.
They've both visited Dover under the Costa flag.
The demise of the Costa Allegra seems to have been the result of a serious fire in February, just six weeks after the Costa Concordia debacle.
