17:5868624Paul -
1875 Sinnock & Co. Directory of Dover
says:
Albert WELLS, hairdresser and perfumer and perruqier, 18 Snargate Street Dover.
This would be next door to Scotts.
On the other side of WELLS at No. 17 was the Dover Standard newspaper office.
Amos the photographer was at No.12.

18:3268639Paul - Presumably a perruqier was someone who made perriwigs!
Are you related to Albert ??

20:5572487Great Paul, but could you try erasing the colour from your picture to get it to blend in with the yesteryear example, would be equally as interesting I think. Worth a try?

16:2074520 With the `Modern Gent` shop opening up in Snargate street, I thought it may be good to put it back on the map. Just along from Tony`s new shop mentioned above, is the site of the now demolished Hoverhotel. A bit of Autumn colour, and a mysterious stairway leading up to maybe some secret garden, and all unseen by the general public for many year`s. Anything can look interesting if you can see things with another pair of eyes.

17:4274536That certainly is facinating. My mother used to tell me of her adventures in the tunnels as a youngster, a great adventure playground until the shells started falling.
Perhaps someone from DDC or DTC should get in touch with Channel4 to get a Time Team visit here - just tell them they'll need pneumatic drills in place of the usual trowels.

18:3474542i am fairly certain that the steps lead to the remains of a victorian folly, meant to be a miniature version of dover castle.
if i am right, john iverson from the museum done a bit on the telly about it.
cue paul wells for the facts.

19:5474560Won't post the details of the folly as that is in a private garden and they weren't happy with the publicity/vandalism that subsequently occured, but no that is is a few doors down.
I think this is just garden terracing and I think one of the old maps referred to a gymnastion on one of them !!
Been nice knowing you :)

If I recall this area also had some terraces which grew grapes, or was it more towards the area of Bluebirds.
