Surprised no-one's mentioned this. Taken from this weeks Dover Mercury by Graham Tutthill.
"One of Dover's best known landmarks - the seafront clocktower - will be moved as part of the Western Docks redevelopment plans.
News of the proposed move was confirmed this week as part of a scheme to create a new pier to replace the Prince of Wales Pier - set to be lost to make way for three of the four new ferry berths.
Exactly where the clocktower is to be re-positioned has not yet been decided.
A spokeswoman for Dover Harbour Board said: "We are discussing with various regulators, particularly English Heritage, the relocation of the clocktower so that it remains at the entry to the new pier.
"The proposed location is still being discussed and will be subject to further consultation.""
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

At least the Clock Tower is not going to be demolished (it says here), which is a first. Don't let the philistines do a Brook House/Marine Court/Cafe de France/Dover Stage on it, please.
We also should keep a steely, eagle eye on the beautiful, Grade 1-listed Lord Warden House (Southern House or HMS Wasp in old money). You know what they're like.

surely once it has been down a while it will be forgotten about.?
why take it down now?
sounds like they will reposition it on the council tip.

It's a Landmark and should be kept; if not in that location, at least somewhere prominent.

The Clock Tower and the hovercraft propeller amongst the final remains of the old hoverport buildings. Sadly, the propeller is not going to be put on display in Dover to commemorate the great days of the hovercraft operating from the port. Almost all trace that they ever existed will therefore have been erased from their principal focus of operation. It has been left to the Hovercraft Museum Trust to rescue this colourful relic and it will go to their site in Lee-on-Solent.

Great photo Ed. makes the Tower look quite lonely there amongst the rubble.
It is a shame that the propeller won't be staying here in some prominent position.
Once again a piece of Dover's maritime history being given to someone else. Maybe they should bury it somewhere local and then when it's dug up in years to come, it will be put on display as part of our maritime heritage.

Very interesting shot Ed. Yes everything has been levelled in the immediate area. The views along the seafront have changed completely and you can now get a clear view of that lovely white former hotel(forget the name). Sad though to see this terminal building go as I used to go through there a wee bit travelling by Hovercraft...enjoyed shops and coffee there many times. But changing times...the Clock Tower is a lovely thing.
I am also a great fan of that propeller so its a shame to let it go...but then they let everything go around here including our beloved Miner.

This is a broader shot of the hoverport as a pack of nodding JCB's finish the job off. I suspect that this is another area of Dover which will remain derelict for many years to come. There would appear little justification for the construction of Terminal 2 in the next decade and there is every reason to think that it will never happen.
Chris opined that this would be a wonderful site for a London Eye. Taking that further, it would make a brilliant amusement park. A log flue would be nice, I like log flues. Just daydreaming.

The Clock Tower's looking a bit vulnerable there. Let's not let it fall victim to a cloak-and-dagger dead-of-night Brook House moment - please!
Anyone care to explain how/when/where they are going to move it?
Cheers,
Andy

As I think I mentioned before a new location is a lot better than not at all which is quite possible given the proposed changes for the area.
I am sure that it has been moved before in the past - perhaps Ed will know ? It may be 1923 or so when there was a lot of demolition and widening of the roads there ?
Been nice knowing you :)

As for the Propeller, again this should definitely stay in Dover, the Hovercraft is now a significant part of the history of this town. I love the Prince of Wales Pier, I hate to think of it been demolished at all

14:2729336From my post #9 above:
"Chris opined that this would be a wonderful site for a London Eye. Taking that further, it would make a brilliant amusement park. A log flue would be nice, I like log flues. Just daydreaming."
Front page of the Dover Express today has a picture of the London Eye captioned "Iconic landmark: The creators of the London Eye are looking at something for Dover."
Must have been reading Dover Forum!
