David Beckingham,

could never play again. an injury could prevent him from ever playing for England again. Shock, Horror.
As the news put it, we are a country in mourning.
Get over it and get a life news people, he's earnt more in 6 months than you will earn in a life time, his missus earns more than he does.
I'm sure the poor little mite will be ok or should we start a fund for him. ?

Ian,you got it wrong he gets some £250.000 per week +the £400million or more he has already got,so I would say he gets more in one week then we would get in a life time.

As Iv said in the past, footballers overpaid for what they do.
Who saw the mercury front page thursday on FRED DURRANT
a true footballer and probably done more than beckham will ever do, and with more problems in war times
i couldnt give a monkeys for any england players. all over paid, out of touch and not good role models for kids. Sadly the country hangs on a dream that will never happen that england will win world cup.

I rather hoped this thread referred to the sad death Peter Graves when I saw it. I've had more fun watching him in Mission Impossible and Airplane than I've ever had watching that bunch of immoral over-paid berks kicking a pigs bladder around a pitch.

they are the are the most successful side for ages, plenty of pride, just look at the results.
what they earn is irrelevant.
maybe they are overpaid, but i reckon we would all like to earn the same.

What results are they, then, Howard? List the trophies lifted high by an England captain since 1966........it won't take long. England need to start winning things if the stars aren't to be viewed as immoral, overpaid primadonnas.

Becks
Regardless of how much is paid he is one of the very few footballers that wears his England shirt with pride. He helped the UK win the Olympic bid by tirelessly canvessing other countries and attending high profile functions. He plays 'soccer' in America and in their close season plays Serie A football for no other reason other than to secure a place in this years World Cup.He doesn't need the money but did it purely to keep fit and up to the standard required by the current England manager. The injury must be a very personal blow to him and I for one feel for the young man.
In Beckham we have an Englishman that is known and respected (loved by the girls) worldwide..why can't we be proud of that for once instead of continually knocking our hero's.

Sorry, Marek, but that's codswallop. Beckham is not a hero. He gets paid a fortune for playing a game, plus untold millions in sponsorship deals and kickbacks; quite how that makes him a hero is beyond me. Heroes put their lives on the line in service of the country every day for a paycheck that Beckham wouldn't get out of bed for.
Remember the copper who lost his life in the floods of Cumbria earlier this winter when the bridge he was on collapsed? Or any one of the young men and women of the armed forces whose bodies return through Wootton Bassett to respectful silence? Or the thousands who work for the emergency services in all weathers 24/7? THEY are heroes, footballers aren't. At the moment they're not even half decent role models.

the current teams record speaks for itself.
under the present management team that they have turned into the best chance we have had since 1966.
your generalisation of footballers does you no credit, of course there are those that behave apallingly, just as the vast majority now spend time in thecommunity helping the disadvantaged, usually giving coaching to youngsters that would never have had a chance.
i fail to see how their earnings come into it, none of us when buying a gramophone record or one of those new fangled CD things says " i like that, it is wonderful music, but that glitter bloke earns too much for my liking".

I make no apology for my views, Howard. If they're old fashioned, then so be it. I fail to see how my opinion does me 'no credit' - it's just my opinion, that's all.
Tell me about this record that speaks for itself, then. Have the FA had to reorder more trophy cabinets? Erm, no. So, what's this fabulous record that warrants the luxurious lifestyle and wanton morals?

I love the game and you are right sportsman are not hero's but some do become icon's for the young and are often looked at as role models.
Becks in his younger days was a bit of a lad but he has matured and does generally accept he is someone that the young look up to. There is certainly not much he does that I can think of that is a bad example. Yes he is getting a lot of publicity over his operation but that is because of the World Cup and that he will miss it, he has been a good ambassador for the game worldwide which is another reason he gets this publicity.
I find it strange people who do not like football are always quick to have ago when a footballer or football it's self come into the lime light. Like it or not it is our National sport and many millions in this Country follow the game. Yes a few get paid far too much and yes it is damaging the game, but that is those at the top of the tree. You have to remember though a footballer like most sports people have to make their money over a 15 to 20 year period. Try watching the Kids on a Sunday, then look at their parents you will soon realise every parent there wants their son to be a top class footballer even another Beckham.
It is said, but I do not know if it is true in that Beckham gives his England wages to Charities he supports, but then if that is true and I have no reason to disbelieve it some of you would find a way to criticise him for that no doubt.
I do not see many coming on here having a go about the actors and actresses, who make millions out of TV and Films. We are paying for that in our TV Licence, what we purchase or the films we watch. These people are making millions for years far longer than any sports person and a good number sod off out of the Country once they have their millions so they do not get taxed.
Katie Price and Peter Andre were headlines for weeks, still are for that matter how many have come on here about them. Both made millions, both nothing but a waste of space but did we get the Country is in mourning over them, of course not and I would rather know about Beck's than them any day.
If you do not like football fine that's your choice but I am sure if others know of your likes some would turn their nose up at it and find away to criticise it. Live and let live you will not change the world Beck's is news and one thing for sure he is proud to say he is English and proud to put the shirt on. You may not like the sport but at least be proud enough of your Country to want them to do well and yes maybe even WIN.

Sorry, Harry, but you've got me wrong, and badly so. I've supported football all my life, and when I lived in London was a regular at Stamford Bridge for many years, in the days when Chelsea played the likes of Carlisle Utd and Grimsby Town. It would do you well to find out who you are making assumptions about before you start casting allegations that have little bearing in fact.
I merely happen to believe that the values we seem to hold are arse about face when footballers hold a lifestyle second to none whilst others in society are treated as second class citizens and they do more, much more, than footballers. Howard is right when he says that footballers do act as worthy role models for many, however at Premiership level the standard has been ultra poor of late, especially in the Chelsea team I have supported since the age of 8.

Andy -there are lots of ways to be a good man. I hate football and I think footballers are in the main arrogant overpaid eejits with no thighs to speak of (I am a rugby girl!) - but I have to say beckham has been a better public figure than most footballers. And like it or not, young people in particular admire footballers, so we might as well big up the good ones!!

we seem to forget a simple thing.
youngsters idolise footballers and rock stars, not have a go heroes, firefighters or soldiers.
it has always been that way always will be.
marek made some very valid points about david beckham, parents love him because of the example he sets their kids.
he is looked up to because of his clothes, haircuts and tattoos.
the bonus for parents is that he is happily married man, never been in trouble with the law, no problems with drink or drugs, not even a traffic offence.
in his job he gives 100 per cent every gane without fail irrespective of who he is playing for.
now can we just get back to patriotism?
