the pledge by the last government that we would all see our local quack within 48 hours of ring up has been scrapped.
i never knew there was a pledge, i usually wait for 2 weeks to see mine.
what is the worst here?
the last government who made a pledge that the doctors could not keep, or the new one that says the doctors should decide when they see us?

Howard - there was a problem before over targets by which a proportion of appointments had to be done within 48 hours. Patients who wanted to book ahead were complaining that they were being told to call back nearer the time that they needed an appointment and, when they did, could not get one and had to take pot-luck. Basically in order to meet targets doctors were not fulfilling patient needs. With my crowded schedule if I need an appointment it is best to book several days ahead and get a definate one. There was a big row about it in the papers a year or so ago so the Conservative pledged to change the system enabling doctors to meet patient demand. It was yet another case of central dictat detracting from what people need and want locally.

i know what you are saying barry, but the new edict is that the doctors choose who is priority.
how can they diagnose who is urgent on the basis of a telephone call between the patient and the receptionist?

The problem lies with patients not turning up for their appointments which wastes millions of pounds per year.Maybe one way round it would be to make everyone cough up a tenner (in advance) for an appointment which could either go towards one's prescription costs or refunded after keeping the appointment. No show = No refund.

i have no problem with my gp,i can an apointment either next day [24 hours] or two days [48 hours.]i can allso book an apointment up to 3 months in advance.
I am pleased to see the back of targets as they were - they were more hindrance than help, created by peole with no idea about the real work. However, I am concerned that they are being scrapped without anything in their place, such as Quality Targets, more centred on the experience of service users. Such as was the GP pleasant? Was the receptionist helpful? Without some standards and goals the services will quickly deteriorate - hurrah goodbye to old targets, but lets have some quality measures and audits to keep the standards up.

I shall phone my GP at 08.00 tomorrow. Doubtless I shall be told to hang on as "all the operators are busy" but I will get an appointment probably before 09.30.
What's the problem?

the problem that you speak of does not apply to any of the places that i have lived.
i am always early for an appointment, if others had not turned up i would have been called in sooner, that has never happened.

aww i have no problems like that at all.. i rang up because i hurt myself at work, and was asked if an appointment in 10 minutes was good enough!!
Mine are very good, but i do find that there arent that many appointments for if you are working and need one later inthe day...
There are no services for working adults! If I need to see the GP I have to take a whole day off work because I work in Essex and London mainly! As service providers, that sucks.

Equally, my GP does evening appointments for "working people" up to 20.00

Never had an issue with my GP, I always get excellent service, one two occasions life saving. But I do know my GP has had plenty of issues with the over-regulation and target driven Labour led NHS.

why is mine such a problem?
no problem with the doctors, state of the art surgery and everything.
i often wonder why i am one of maybe 3 waiting to see a doctor, whilst 30 or 40 seats are empty.
all very confusing.

With my doctors I have a problem with booking appointments in advance. Having children to get to school I ask for appointments after 9:30 but they only book appointments up to 9:30 after that you have to call at 8 and hope for an opening. This is even more awkward with the children as it means keeping one off school in the hope that there is an appointment available.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

the sunshine island is clearly not the place for the poor who happen to fall ill.
Howard, there are NO poor people on Jersey, they all millionnaires or, multi-millionaires. Not sure which category Marek is in. Being a good socialist I expect him to have given all his money to deserving dog caring street corner sitters.

3 wives and a gaggle of kids to support so no spare dish dosh for street beggars (they are not allowed) in Jersey. But something that you would like..a crowded High St bustling with shoppers , High St shops and department stores. No Wetherspoons,no Tesco's plenty of eataries and old fashioned boozers. It's like stepping back in time...eh up and e bye gum it's lovely lad. Now wheres me knotted hankie the suns out...?
