Very good article and many ideas Dover should be looking to use

Knowing the area of bishopthorpe very well i would have to disagree Ross. This area is a strip of shops about a 1/4 mile long mostly on one side of the street, is about a 10 minute walk to City centre.
It adjoins York city walls(a major tourist walking route) the road leads to York race course and is on part of the tourist route from York train station and transport museum to cliffords tower and York museum, it also serves a large catchment area including 2 caravan parks, rowntree park a large park 5 minutes from York city centre with a popular tennis club, the ouse riverside walk passes within 1/4 mile, oh and not forgetting property prices in the area are upwards of £500 000.

Reginald
I also know the area very well having spent time there.
Dover can hopefully learn from this and other areas around Yorkshire

The area has the feel of Dulwich Village (london) and a similar resident base, all Goji berry and Quinoa!

Just because places are different doesn't mean we cannot learn from them.
For me the lessons here are:
a) Proper community engagement and involvement
b) A clear unity of purpose (e.g. single website portal for all the shops)
c) Encouraging independent traders
d) Creating an evening economy
All of these are things are equally applicable to the 3 distinct shopping areas in Dover, namely, the "high street/old town" (Market Square to Maison Dieu), The High Street (Ladywell to Bridge Street) & London Road.
(I have ignored St James as this is frankly another fairly uninspiring me too open air shopping mall that can be found the length and breadth of the UK and in no way shouts Dover or even visit me to anyone)
Each of these has a slightly different offer and client base and they must not lose these differences as this is what gives each a chance to stand out and "make a name" for themselves. However to survive they need to ensure that they understand what their community wants and endeavour to provide it whilst at the same time linking with the other 3 areas to maximise opportunities.

And 62-64 Biggin Street will be back in Auction in May so I am told. Last years buyer is already in receivership. Let's hope someone with some proper money and vision buys these properties next time!

Next to the subway in Bench street, I am rather surprised that they only open 5 days a week for about half the year when they must be paying rent and business rate for the whole year.

The Charlton Centre seems to be going well again an estate agent has opened in a unit at the front and a sweet shop further inside.

Quote from Jay’s Facebook page (the owner of VLounge:
I have never been good at asking for help I've always been pretty self sufficient and far too proud but here goes...
V lounge is closing as a vape shop within the next few days and it's going to be a couple of weeks till we are up and running as a burger bar... BUT we really need support from dover people, we are still a coffee shop/bar and bloody good one at that with amazing coffee tea and soft drinks as well as beers spirits and liqueurs. The whole team at v lounge work Thier asses of everyday to keep the place lovely and the atmosphere is always really nice all we say is if ever we needed you to use us it's now !! we need your support to help us survive and help get us to the next phase of the business the burger bar.
All we ask is if you are in town and fancy a coffee or tea instead of a multi national chain try us you won't be disapointed !!
If you you fancy a beer or drink instead of Wetherspoons give us a shot we have music we put on karaoke on a Thursday night and it's always friendly and fun !!
If you want to hire the venue for anything let us know or even if you want to put on an event we are here.
Anyway that was tough but it's done.
Take care hope to see you soon x

I have never been inside the place but have not read or heard anything against the business or him, he certainly seems to try and keep people informed via FB about what he is trying to achieve.
Could this new venture be trying to cash in on the demise of McDonald's in the town centre, that was my first thought rather than the straws referred to by Ross.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Good Lord Cap'n I think something to keep you awake might be more appropriate, given the speakers, local government types and academics...

It’s quite a walk, even on warm sunny summer’s day, from the bus station in Pencester, across Pencester Gardens, Stembrook car park, past the former Co-op store building (purchased by DDC for?) across Castle Street (watch out for traffic) along Dolphin Passage with its boarded up site of the old cinema/nightclub, to get across the St. James car park to the new Marks & Spencer food store.
Return trip with bags of food to Pencester will be quite difficult or even impossible for some. Nowhere to sit down in St. James either.
Bus route to St James needs sorting urgently for those that arrive in Pencester.
M&S Food opens on Wednesday 16th at 10am.
