Wait for the question before you answer DFL. No comment will be insufficient I guess!

Based on the calbre of shops in the town it seems to me that there is not enough money in the town to attract more retailers, also, Dover is a very small town in terms of population and an aging one at that, so less economically active.
That has nothing to do with politics, and nothing that a political party can change.

I do agree with you ..but then labour shouldn't have promised the world
Thus turning into a political football

Bob Frost was there! Yup faced with a fait accompli of St James. TOO much investment. TOO many people, both councillors and locals having drunk the Kool-Aid.
As ever the local Dover excuse, quote, 'we didn't actually lose money on it'!
(See every other DDC grande project and 'creative' accounting)
Whilst on t'council I spent a lot of time at LGA conferences (never claimed expenses) talking to major players in retail and other councils, many pleasently suprised if retailers could pay utility bills never mind about business rates.
That was pre-Corvid, after which 'all bets are off'.
Having travelled much of the country (greetings from just below Folly Bridge Oxford - just gotta see the Alfred Jewel in the Ashmolean again) I STILL think Dover has more potential than most places I have visited.
It would not be difficult to do something with the town, meanwhile you/we have the farce of the Maison Dieu cycle route (other people's money, gotta spend it), the rapid bus scene (other people's money so we have to spend it) and there is a certain 'high ranking' council officer who still has a working model of a ski-lift up to the Castle in his office......
Best of luck. I'm away for a while .....

Sorted out Deal Pier though!
Tenant into High Court. Council employees 'let go of'. (Sacked!)
What more you want?

Reading this thread I started to think how Dover compares to central Calais or Boulogne-sur-Mer for shops, and even with the high number of vacant retail units, I'd say Dover is miles better than those to over the water (the hypermarkets don't count).

Haven't been into the town for about half a decade, but to me Calais was always more like a city compared to Dover's town. Especially once you cross over the bridge away from the tourist area.
Way more industry as well. Like a North of England port of old.
I'd say Boulogne has more to offer the tourist than Dover does in terms of restaurants and shops. It's more like Canterbury than Dover in that respect (again, it's been a good half a decade since I've been there).

The veg stall in the market square had its last day of trading today just a shame the weather could have been better for them. The Dunford family have been trading in Dover for many years and will still be running their fruit n veg wholesale business in River.Theyve been regular traders in the market square for many years on Tuesday and Saturday but they decided to give the stall up as they are retiring. They start very early and often dont get packed down until 6.00pm some days, hard n heavy work in all weathers. Not sure if anyone will be taking the pitch over as yet.

The end seems to be close for the Burtons in Dover.
Any time I'm down that part of the town I'm surprised that it's still there!
