Fun Fact - Operation Stack (parking traffic up on A20/M20 due to hold ups at port) was first used in 1988 - 35 years ago!

So the @Port_of_Dover, having accepted specific bookings for coaches months ago, now wishes coach operators to change pick up times, hotel bookings, drivers hours etc?
Are they hoping Port Operations will be in the next Olympics and are determined to keep their amateur status?

I really cannot understand why they haven’t done this over past years. After all, they are well aware of the booking figures weeks before…..

Mrs E tweets: "I have been pressing the Port, Ministers & Kent Police to Keep Dover Clear this Easter weekend as high levels of tourist traffic are once again expected." Useful stuff.

We do know that and see it when we try to park near the front.

I wonder if Natalie was listening to Melvyn Bragg and guests this morning on In Our Time, the subject being King Cnut?
Meanwhile the Mail forecasts the end of days today!

Port of Dover
@Port_of_Dover
Last weekend was a challenging time for our local community and we've been working closely with our partners to keep the town and wider Dover area clear. We're grateful for the support of our MP as we prepare for the coming weekend. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Little criticism from @NatalieElphicke about your ongoing uselessness. Presumably keeping a seat warm on the rather well remunerated Harbour Board, to join all the other failures who have been nice to the Evil Empire for two days work a month at the Harbour House 'death star'?

Parking Dover bound export freight on the M20/A20 - ‘Operation Stack’ as it is now known actually started several years previous to 1988. At the time i was a Freight Supervisor DHB at the Eastern Docks IFA. One particular Tuesday evening we arrived at 1800hrs for our 12 hour night shift. Four of us were instructed to take the freight section Bedford mini bus up to the Newington roundabout/junction and “HOLD THE FREIGHT’, that became its name for several years. We were issued with a 4x3m portakabin, with two seats, a portaloo and a field telephone to liaise with Terminal Control. Happy days.

Funny you should say that, Mrs E advocates "Scrap TAP and Keep Dover Clear". She says "It’s really important to move the TAP system away from Aycliffe altogether. As a first step, it urgently needs to be moved back overnight. Residents deserve a good night’s sleep – so I have been pressing ministers and roads chiefs at National Highways to take my plan forward."
https://natalieelphicke.com/2023/04/27/scrap-tap-and-keep-dover-clear/
Apparently she was delighted to secure £45 million to Keep Dover Clear[!]. "Now we need to make sure it is spent properly – to improve port infrastructure and local roads alike."

As the Daily Mirror (bless them!) put it on 28th April: 'EXCLUSIVE: Tory levelling-up cash used to sort out 'Brexit passport mess' at Dover. Now, the Mirror can reveal ministers are using funds from the Conservatives’ flagship levelling-up pot to increase capacity at the dock.'
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/tory-levelling-up-cash-used-29830446
Shocker! Still, at least they accurately reported Transport Minister Richard Holden as stating “Kent County Council has been provisionally awarded £45m from the Levelling-Up Fund to support additional border control booths, extra capacity in buffer zones and resequencing the order of controls at Port of Dover. The solution was given to them by a few of us at Aycliffe years ago… You will never get rid of TAP due to increase every year by trade..
The solution given was to move the start of TAP to the top of the hill by the layby.. There is space to build booths up there for the police to control the traffic. Also they could build a proper control centre there to control it.
However the highways Agency said it is too foggy for lorries to stop.. hang on the queue goes up pass there when foggy
They also said that the queue would be in the Tunnels.. hang on use the traffic lights….and lorries were n there before.
I have no faith in any elected official or non elected agency to sort this out.
Meanwhile Aycliffe residents will have more fun with Lorry horns and pollution
