I spoke with the P.C..S.O. today who is busy around the ward.
the tram shelter came up in conversation, and he will be sending a letter out to residents around the folkestone road to ask them to be look outs and phone in any seen damage.
Even better a discription of those causing the damage.
together we can solve this.

Better still, one of the residents could stick a CCTV camera in their window and record everything that is happening. Cheap, easy, and modern day. Leave the poor old PCSO to trudge around with his truncheon and his whistle. Give him more time to compose snail mail to the residents.

like it keith.
trying to be understanding now, the vandals could become extinct like the dodo.
there are no flowers to rip out and everything that could be thrown in the river has been.
they may be entitled to counselling, hope that service has not fell victim to the cuts?

The company that did the etching on the glass went bust and the suppliers of the glass are looking for another etcher.
I understand that there is another method with the same end-result, but very much cheaper, but because it is a listed building, they won't use it.
It could have been repaired and refurbished by now and no one would have known any different, but no, we have to wait for it to be exactly perfect, then another expensive smashing time when some brian-dead dunce feels like it.

Just putting a camera up to monitor a public place is not as straight forward as it would seem,

We have highlighted on here a number of ways to help to resolve the problem
have any of these been taken up?

Martin: that link just appears to refer to regulation of public bodies. There would not appear to be similar legislation relating to private individuals wishing to set up CCTV or every corner shop in the country would be acting illegally by recording their customers in order to forestall theft. The webcam on Snargate Street and all the others around the country would similarly be illegal.

The problem being Ed is that the CCTV would not be on their own property/customers but on a specific public place, would it be allowed as evidence in Court? I doubt it very much.

Take your word for it, Martin. However, if I were living in a house overlooking the Tram Shelter, I would stick a camera in one of my upstairs windows straight away, zoomed on the shelter and recording on a hard drive. That would enable the locals to identify the perpetrators whether or not the courts would be interested. Should imagine that knowledge would deter the little blighters doing the damage as expect they live locally. An "Historic Dover" plaque would not go amiss affixed to the shelter and with a prominent warning on the bottom to the effect that it is being recorded on CCTV. Total cost a fraction of the expense of continuously replacing the broken glass.

If you are recording CCTV images you need to be registered under the Data Protection Act. That governs how you are allowed to use the images and how you must protect the interests of people who may be identifiable from the recordings. As long as you do that, there is no reason why your privately filmed CCTV images cannot be used as evidence in court.

A personal video camera obviously is not a cctv and therefore exempt from being registered.

Of course privately filmed CCTV can in certain cases be used in Court, the issue here is filming a public place to catch offenders. If the Police believe it is necessary for them to do so then it will be a RIPA authorised Superintendent that gives the authority to do so.

A simple statement by all head masters at Assembly of local schools in that area warning the children that this shelter is under surveillance and if any child is caught causing damage from any school they will face expulsion as this is not good for the schools Reputation, and with that information any child caught its there own fault. While a child is wearing a school uniform they are an ambassador for that school and if the school was to explain this in proper terms we may just see a turn round.
