Might it be true that for each act of vandalism there are many hundreds of visits to and passings-by of the shelter?
The vast majority that come anywhere near the thing do no damage.
BUT
It has not been painted, as I had assumed it would be, given what was said here the last time this issue came up.
In the mean-time. I suggest that laminated glass be used for the time being:with or without a transfer of the etching to maintain the 'look'.
If anybody sees an abandoned couch nearby they could do far worse than help it find it's way into the shelter, but a park bench would do just as well.
As it stands (quite literally) the shelter makes a good whipping-boy for the frustrations (alcohol boosted) of the yob and for the disgruntled resident/tax-payer.
Laminated glass is cheaper, easier to come by, harder to break and less satisfying to break. I don't know whether any local printer prints onto plastic film, but if they did, achieving the etched look would be a doddle.
[again!] The shelter deserves to be re-decorated. You all (we all, really) might as well admit that this whole thing is our fault. For it is only that self same 'we' that can do anything about it. It is not a 'problem' it is an opportunity to shine.

Yes Howard, I was almost as disgusted with the wine choice as I was with the act itself! Then I had a 'class reality check' and came to my senses. We always had a bottle of Blue Nun at Christmas time...although not whilst driving!
Back to the thread: agreed Tom, the glass could probably be Perspex or a laminated glass. Although we could object on an aesthetic level, it can't be any worse than those faux sash windows with plastic sash bars.

I'm sorry Keith, but it has to be moved to a more safer place, constantly replacing the glass is expensive, ridiculous and ineffective as the mindless morons will thank us for supplying them the opportunity to break it again

Laminated glass with transfers would be scratched so in turn would look awful, then eventually broken aka bus stop timetables.
CCTV will cost too much, it needs to be moved to where it would be appreciated and surrounded by artifacts from the same era
I wish the youths/vandals acted like the youth from the era the tram shelter came from then we wouldn't have this problem. Bring back the birch & stocks I say

The pressure is rising on Dover's Barry-ometre for the return to this...
"TREADMILLS: - close compartments in which a prisoner remained for a quarter of an hour at a time, vigorously treading down a wheel of 24 steps at a fixed rate. (after a period of rest, they resumed again). The men could get no firm tread as the steps sank away from under their feet and made it very tiring. The air became hot and difficult to breathe.... Although stocks, pillory and roadside gibbets were no longer used jails were very severe - treadmill, crank, oakum picking, and strict regimentation. Transportation only ceased to be an important method for major offenders in the early 1850s.. where there was NO threat to PROPERTY, (the criminal law was very lenient towards violence and sentences passed on those caught seem surprisingly light). Not until c.1865 were effective standards and treatment in gaol brought in and not until 1877 was a 'coherent national penal system' in place.
(from "The Victorian Underworld" by Kellow Chesney, 1970)"
Thanks to Kath Hollingsbee for the above quote. (which contains no added emphasis from me.)

barry w-s don't think we have ever disagreed before, but on this one we are mile apart.
I will fight to keep the shelter at it's present site, and welcome views from sheila.
Roger this has become a very emotive issue and loking for your long term support on this.
I welcome your reply once the council has responded, but fear they will use costs of a way of moving the shelter(which has always been there intention)
cctv is not costly they have different agencies holding them and a local is happy to put one in his house.
This together with visits to schools and the media would go some way to solve the problem.
having been out of campaigns for so long I can feel a campaign starting up

A leaflet campaign around the Folkestone Road area mentioning a £1000 reward for information leading to a conviction should flush out enough people to identify the guilty party.

So do I, DDC can not be expected to throw OUR money away on repeated repairs.
Peter who would provide the £1000 reward.

I live on the Folkestone Road, just up from the tram-shelter and would like to see it stay where it is.
Maybe we do need local community involvement, maybe we need local people to help refurb/redecorate it and maybe also, we need local people to keep an eye on it, whether that is a human eye or a CCTV eye, it doesn't matter, but any help would make a difference.

Not even £1k Reg. A suitable DVR to continuously record for less than £200 and a quality camera with interchangeable lens for about £150. One of the houses nearby could have one discretely in their window, but I understand they don't want the be "involved".
