My mate Derek owns the flat to the left of the picture. It's off Maison Dieu and leads up to Harold St and Taswell St (site of the very first bomb to be dropped by the Germans WW1) but I'm buggered if I can recall the name of that road...

Talking of bombs, who occupies the ground floor of the building which bears this blue plaque?

Really Peter, it's just across the road! Didn't have to go far did you? What did Flanagan and Allen sing?
Really Howard, I was talking about Mike Knight of East Lee Guest House, not Mike McFarnell of Amanda Guest House!
Terry
PS Harpers Bazaar, I like that! Took a while though.

Re #624: Here is a photo of the destruction caused by the last German shell to land on Dover in WW2, taken from the late Roy Humphreys fascinating book "Dover at War 1939-45". It fell on shops owned by Pickfords and Hubbards the umbrella manufacturers - unfortunately the umbrellas were not resistant to high explosive shells dropping on a ballistic trajectory from heavy naval guns mounted in batteries on the French coast! Later the TSB and now the Gateway.
Re 621: Here is a propaganda postcard of the first bomb to be dropped on Dover, Christmas Eve 1914. It can be seen in various books on Dover but I have actually just acquired this postcard from Germany off Ebay. It took months to arrive, unlike the actual bomb. My address is First Floor Flat, 9 Victoria Park, Dover. The postcard was correctly addressed but was delivered to First Floor Flat, 9 Victoria Park, Herne Bay! This was back in the snow last winter. There was a knock at the door some weeks ago and there was the chap who had received it. He had very kindly delivered it in person on his first visit to Dover after receiving it!

As this was in danger of going on to "next page" I'll give you a clue. Ray must have seen it on his dog walking circuit and I'm sure that newbie Roger Husk will know.
JHG is banned.
