OK its time to put Mr Matcham out of his misery. The photo shows the junction of Branch Street and Peter Street.
I would concur with Terry as to where you were standing.

Possibly sitting in the Roman Quay looking at the rear view of St Mary's Howard. Have you got a thing about this church?

i find most old churches interesting terry, even the most humble parish church has some fascinating individual features.
speaking of the pub opposite the back of the church they seem to have a lot of open air swearing competitions.
one last week looked very competitive, possibly ending in a four way tie.

Re Terry's mention of the Scottish Laundry in post #1267
Some time ago I bought a map of Dover dated 1938. It bears the annotation shown below saying " Scottish Laundry. Buckland Avenue, Dover. Site of proposed works."
Therefore one concludes that it was employed by the planning department. There is a rubber stamp on the bottom saying "Printed on War Substitute Paper" so it must have been used in WW2 or just after.
Wonder where you go to get your sporran laundered nowadays?

My friend lives on South Rd Tower Hamlets in a house that was once a laundary it still contains clues of its history ie a large trap floor from the first floor to the scullery where the washing was first sorted and then dropped through for washing.

Digressing slightly and prompted by Ed, when Hospital Radio first became a registered charity it went via KCC, as was the case then. Or certificate was also printed on "War Substitute Paper". It proudly stated that we were registered under the War Charities Act 1940 and the National Assistance Act 1948. This was in 1970 I hasten to add! Sadly, I no longer have the document, someone pinched it off the wall!
