My wife overheard two of the local down and outs planning their day on her way to work yesterday. One was saying to the other, quote,"see you in the square we can watch the t.v." that in itself is enough to put anyone off.

There doesdnt appear to be many people in favour of thios screen, everyone i talk to moans about it.
I think people just like to moan, it saves them having to get of their backsides and do anything proactive. And, of course, it then becomes someone elses fault as well as someone elses responsibility.

Just to add to your posting Keith .Over two hundred people took the time to object, two people spoke at the planning meeting as I did in objection plus several people went to the meeting at the TownHall and spoke against the application.
Everyone i have spoken to in River is against it and you know me I speak to a lot of people .I have had people stop me in the street ,bus drivers ,shop owners many may people .Why else did I speak out against it
A lot of people are amazed at the size of the screen .
I think the PCT should be held to account .I also was in conversation with a proffessional man and his views were in a richer area it would never have got through as the masses would have objected more strongly .
I hope the Chairman of the Planning Committee has visited the site .

There are plenty of people out there who think it's a good idea and many who are ambivalent. I was even chatting to an RAF vet in his 80s in the Market Square as it was being finished off, and he thought it was a great idea. Another lady in her 50s on her lunch break told me it was great to see something positive being done in Dover - she was fully supportive. Most of the people at work I've spoken to who live locally think it's a great idea - notably they are mostly younger. Are there any contributors to DF younger than 40?
People will be very quick to write in to criticise and complain, but positive contributions are much rarer - online forums are proof enough of that! I would be very wary of interpreting 1:5 positive to negative letters received at DDC as being the true ratio of public feeling for this very reason.
Still, I suppose such positive feedback will be ignored in certain quarters or dismissed as simply being 'wrong'.

Phil, lots of younger people share my view .Why go to market square to view when you can sit in your home .Drink and food on tap .
If a giant TV is the only thing to bring Dover on the map .God help us all .
Its the same with anything its always those that are against things that put their point across and get noticed. Those that are for it dont bother as they see it happening anyway. I live in River and I am for it.
We know at least a third of the content on it when it goes live has to come from the community, so it is up to us to use that positively and let people see things that are good and happening around Dover ie the recent Hellfire Corner Weekend a short video of that could have been made and used and the same for all other events.

Sue, the screen is a small start, should Wetherspoons develop the old cinema site it will be known as a Lloyds No1. This is the party bar side of their business offering entertainment much longer licensing hours and during the evening aimed directly at the younger market. Couple this with the big screen the Elle Bar and perhaps a couple of cafe bars and the Market Square will be the centre of a more vibrant enjoyable atmosphere.
As I have said before, this town only seems to live for the memory of the second world war, it is time to move on as other towns have done successfully.

Good point about the community content there Paul. The screen is in now, so lets make the most of it and move on instead of rehashing the same old arguments in this thread and elsewhere. Perhaps the various talents in this forum should put their heads together and come up with some interesting content!
Any ideas anyone? Home videos highlighting the positives of the local area?
It is true that people who moan often do so loudly and often, and it is often a means of avoiding action. People who are either in favour or indifferent are unlikely to feel the need to flag it up. I love Dover, but one of the things I despise about it is its small-minded, high-handed, nit-picking resistance to anything new or innovative. Many of the people moaning will be the same people who do little or nothing active to drive forward development or attract business or tourism. I rather suspect that many of the people moaning will also be people who live at a distance and actually have nothing to fear from it (yes, I know, there will be some locals, but I also know there will be droves from further away who just want to carp.) For goodness sake, people, give it a chance, and while you are at it, come up with something better if you can.

Im all for progress (not sure big screen will do much)
but will be good if it all takes off
I thnk locals have had so many promises that it has made many sceptics sadly
the only way to change that is to see Dover prosper

The point is nobody seems to have any better ideas, I sometimes wonder whether certain people want this town to enter the 21st century or not.
Sue you are against the screen and I do respect your stance but what would you do as one of the chief 'carpers' you must have alternative ideas perhaps you would share them with us?
