DAVE1
In not one of the carpers but heres some ideas to make Dover better
1; Get a proper cinema, one that hold a larger number of people
2; get a bowling alley thus saving our youth having to leave Dover to take part
in this activity
3; Get bigger and big name shops
4; Briighten up the buildings which look run down
5; improve Dovers iimage in Dover and beyond
thats a small start
Well you did ask ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

As I have said before the vast majority of those I have spoken to are in favour of the screen
Sue a real surprise that the people of River (that you have spoken to) are against it. Is this a case of like attracting like? Oh and they do not have to look at it do they?
Keith who is going to fund the things you ask for?
The demographics and catchment area of our fair town have always convinced leisure providers that they will not/cannot make money from putting in the type of facilities you ask for, how do you suggest we change that? Also I would much rather see more investment in things like all weather sports surfaces, a new leisure centre, improvements to the athletics facilities at the Crabble, better children's play areas, improved policing/supervision of our open spaces etc.
As for big name shops, this will not happen whilst small shops are closing because residents go and spend their money in Whitfield, Canterbury, Folkestone, Ashford, Broadstairs etc. If we start spending our money here then there is a chance new retailers will move in.
Yes we do need to brighten up run down buildings and Dover Pride, DDC and various local community forums are working on this, keep an eye out for noticeable improvements over the next few months.
As for item 5 whilst this is within the gift of DDC we the people of Dover, who post on forums like this need to do our bit to "big up" the town; the continued negativity being displayed on local forums is doing none of us any favours.

Absolutely - it is sometimes a bit of a challenge, though, to keep on bigging up when so many take the trouble to complain and frankly whinge. We will never attract the funding for stuff without improving the look and feel of the place - businesses want to migrate to somewhere that will attract business to them, welcome them and value them, and in addition will be an attractive and cared for area. Dover is already a great place, it just needs a bit of a tidy and smarten - a bit like when your front room looks a bit shabby and a coat of paint and a new sofa make it look like a different place and you don't mind people calling!!! And, in this case more importantly, people don't mind calling on you, wipe their shoes when they come in, and don't secretly wipe the cutlery before they eat.............

Right what would I do .I would try to lever more money in to smarten our derlict buildings .
,Enough money to employ more officers to oversee these projects Employ more road sweepers ,fine litter bugs .Paint some of our street furniture ,plant more flowers .Those planters in the precinct are awfull .Not spend money on fireworks which are over in a few minutes .Invest in sport
Do away with these quangoes.
Less meetings and more action .Councillors to walk their patches and chase up complaints .For instance three weeks to get a few branches trimmed from a tree ,stupid or what ..
Councillors to visit schools and listen to the young people actually engage with them
Maintain all our parks to a higher standard .
Take down old posters .
Train all shop assistants on customer care .
Just a few .ideas.
Get a smart town like Bern said .Give your front room a spring clean and people will want to stay .More people staying shops will come .
Spring clean first A big screen only serves to hide the dirt

there is a good debate for and against the tv screen,in my view it enhances the market square with a bit of ambiance.
listed below are some things that have been put in dover in the last two years.
1,sea sport center.
2,tv screen.
great progress i dont think.there are lots of pipe dreams allso being posted on this thread.
1,bowling ally.
2, skating ring.
3,large cinema.
4,ditz/seeda.
5,port develpment.
there are two hopes on these and one of them is dead.long live apathy.

Sadly Brian from your postings you appear to come from from apathy brigade, Even around your own ward, even after constant invites never see you getting involved.
Sadly due to apathy within your ward many bigger projects were unable to get off the ground.
As a regular visitor to your ward running a club and attempting to do more I have found lots of people moaning theres nowt going on in the ward, but we have tried many projects and apathy won the day.
I won't be beaten by it, so we continue to run the club within the ward and always will, but its sad there could be so much more.
Take that with the total negative attitude of the planning dept and you can see how apathy wins.
But im the type of guy that sticks at it, enjoys running the club in the ward, enjoys seeing the pleasure of the kids with the footy
and the bingo fun nights
We will continue to try to do other fings, but wont happen all the time apathy is around.

Do we really need more officers?
I don't think so
What we need is for our elected representatives to step up to the plate and take back control of the council

The Sea Sports Centre has taken ten years to progress. We have been on about a larger cinema for years .The things you have listed Brian take years however a cleaner street scene and a few flowers and better cusiomer service is easily achievable. The money for the derilict buildgins there has to be a big push from DDC .
How many of you have seen the converted taxi office Worthington Street .Nine flats there .Looks good and more homes in the centre of town .These small projects go un noticed

kieth, apathy stems from goverment at all levals.when the new a20 was planed and consulted apon did they listen to the locals in a word NO and look whats happening on a regular bases, road and town gridlocked.as pre worned by local residents.ditz planning well into its 13th year with only the bus station being demolished,as yet no sign of anything being built, depressing isnt it and you wonder why there is tons of apathy about.

But you as usual; partly read my posting
I can't change the national scene although can shout about it.
What I have done purely as a volunterer is carried out my committment to run a youth footy team based in Town and pier.
Not only that but a monthly fun bingo nioght in the heart of Aycliffe(deliberatly in Aycliffe)
We could have done it anywhere, but chose Aycliffe and have stuck in there and provided.
We will continue to do so
I like to shout but at the same time im active (not in the ward i live either) because i know its enjoyed and appreciated.
I recall the recreation officer telling me that they are stretched and I was realy doing the job of the council, because they dont have the man(woman)power
But im happy doing it as a volunteer, what annoys me is people from that same area moaning and groaning yet never say, he can i help !!!!!!
THINK POSITIVE THINK ACTION

you have asked the question why people should watch the screen when they can do the same at home.
why do people go out to eat and drink when they can do that home?
answer, a spot of social intercourse, something enjoyed by the majority of us.
incidentally, do you know what is going to be shown on the screen?
answer, most of us do not at this stage, except for local programming, that is not available on the box at home.
brian is right in post 106, pipe dreams are continually being rolled out about the bowling alley, state of the art cinema, skating rink etc.
never any ideas on how to fund them.
if we get all this malarkey about one screen, why would a large company consider opening a multi screen cinema?
