no alec, there was me, a bemused tourist and a chap consuming something from a blue can and muttering something.
i could just make out the words bbc news 24 on the screen, once i had my hand shielding the sun out.

Yes they have positioned the screen where the sun does not shine directly on it but unfortunately, and I suppose their hands were tied to some degree by mother nature, but it shines directly from behind it. Very very dazzling, was over there yesterday with daughter and it was hard to look at. Ive got some pictures for later use, but although there were some people gathered in the square nobody at all was looking at it. I have the pictures to show this which will use shortly.

this morning there were stacks of people, many tourists and the people in the cafe had altered their seats around to face the screen rather than their companions.
this was just for a test.

Oh dear Howard, looks like the anti-social behaviour has already begun!

before we know it, there could be crowds of people enjoying themselves.
you may be right, would be the thin end of the wedge.

I think it's superb. The test transmission are very quiet, one has to practically stand under it to hear it. I expect the volume will be upped a tad when it starts operating properly. Even today I see workers are still tinkering with it, doubtless adjusting the levels.
Does anyone know when the test ends and the transmission begins properly?
Dover carnival will be using the screen on July 4th. It will be beaming a welcome to Dover message for our special little guest Hayley aswell as showing photographs from previous years. I have also e-mailed Meridian and BBC South East today about coming along on the day.

one of the engineers i spoke to, reckoned it would be fully operational by the beginning of next week.
i think that the picture is excellent, will look a lot nicer when all the wrapping is finally off and the rails are removed.
good to hear about the carnival stuff too, the screen declares that local events will be publicised.

Wouldn't it be great if the cafes, pubs etc around the Market Square could extend the number of tables and chairs out into the Market Square and make it look like a Spanish, Italian or French Piazza ?
Great atmosphere and ambience and with a market all around the Square on Saturdays (not just fruit and veg.), it would really liven up this area.

Fabbo! It has great potential. As you say Howard - even a chance to have some fun and enjoyment. Whatever next!

casting my mind back, was there not a problem a while back with tables and chairs outside?
i seem to remember that there was some sort of tax ready to be levied for this.
anyone with a better memory?

I remembering asking the landlord of the Golden Lion, Rab, some years ago why he didn't have some chairs and tables ouside as he had quite a big area there. He told me it would cost a fortune as the council charged so much per table.
Mind you, I don't think that I would like to sit so close to a busy roundabout

I believe this tax is levied by KCC as they own the pavements.
I wrote to just about every one I could, including KCC officers, the Cabinet there and other Councillors and bodies, but didn't get one reply (sounds familiar ?).
I do think that to enhance our pedestrian areas, the cost could be reduced per table and chair - say 1 to 5 whatever; 6 to 10 tables is so much; then 11 to 20 a slightly different amount and so on, but keep it fair and realistic - to help the Towns and the businesses.
Every business needs to make a profit.
