Have you looked at the cost?

Haven't a clue what it will cost Sue but the fact that so many young men lost their lives and probably shortened the war means the action should be commemorated in style.
I believe something similar is planned in November to celebrate the Armistice.

I understand your views Howard and Brian ,I have said on this forum before my Uncle was in a German Prison of war camp for four years ,my father in law in Burma which ruined his lungs as he was a tin miner before the last war ,came home to a wife very ill who died before the war ended.I donot object to quiet laying of wreaths but not all that goes with it.We have food banks and young females who according to a recent interview given by ladies from Dover, who cannot afford female essentials .So when our Town Councillos parade with red roses on their robes forgive me for asking Questions .
A simple ceremony .

I haven't seen the costs. What are they? It sounds relatively low cost events but could bring visitors into the town to boost the local economy? Isn't that a good thing?

People dont have to go at it hammer and tong at it with high costs. Money is short wont bring them back. Attending smartly dressed with a heart is all that any soul would be happy with. I agree with Sue anyone wearing anything like dressing themselves up like that or going over top not right. I don't like the POPE for doing it also, going a bit of the subject but staying with it if you know what I mean. A band and some wreaths would be nice and people with hearts and thoughts for those souls is more than enough...'Roses on Robes' is this for real sue?
If only everyone could be kind and honest what a better world we would be in.

Amberleaf50 I'm glad you can see the other side of the story.I have attended this ceremony several times Officialy and unofficially.I never wore a red rose and did not attend any form of reception.I travelled on the bus which was provided apart from my last attendance when I travelled with the Mayor . of Deal.Every week some organisation is pleading for money or food for the food banks so now is the time to reign in on expenditure.

#7 and #8, what has that got to do with the zeebruge raid, a lot of men died there as a part of the war effort. may be some people need to go around some of the bigger war grave places in france and belguim to apreshate the sacrifice men payed to keep YOUR freedom.

Brian did you grow up during the war?We only need to watch today's news to se that war still exists. The point I'm trying to make we can remember with out a lot of expense .If you read my posts you will see that I'm pointing out there is poverty in Dover. No skin of my nose I don't pay towards Dover Town Council tax although I believe DDC paid towards the repair of the Bell.I the question on cost but never received an answer.

The Zeebruge raid needs to be remember in the manner it is done that is why the bell is hanging at the town hall it des not cost a lot of cash to put it on it is done over there as well. We have the war graves there to. And we are not taking a bout a council that has no funds ,I would like to see more of their funds used in this way .Also schools in Dover need know about actions like this and the cost in human life ,so it will have to happen a gain,Council members already have gowns etc so no cost there .

Well said Vic. I believe there are council elections next year. Have you ever thought of standing?

I left out the word NEVER happen again in my post about it. sorry.

HMS Somerset berthing at Dover Western Docks here for the Zeebrugge Raid Centenary Service and commemoration tomorrow, just 100 years since the audacious raid on the Mole at Zeebrugge in an attempt to block the German submarines from entering the North Sea where they were creating havoc amongst allied shipping in WW1.
The Type 23 Frigate has come from Zeebrugge where it took part earlier commemorative services.
Tomorrow the Zeebrugge Bell (recently restored) will be rung at Noon at the Town Hall.

No. But I do know that an anonymous councillor in Deal has paid for a thousand hand-held Union Flags for schoolchildren watching the parade out of his own pocket.

Hullo Captain and if I lived in Deal I would be proud to watch the Royal Marines .Why Dover is making so much fuss beggars belief and when the Councillors wear red roses I can't get my head round that. There is only one day when we remember 11th day of the 11 month at the 11th hour.We have war memorials in most towns and villages and then we Remember all who died in whatever conflict.

What's the issue about wearing a red rose?

It is St George's Day so why not wear red roses at least
our saint's day is being acknowledged for once.
Using your logic why remember any historical event including the important November one? My answer is because they are important and in their own way changed the world we now live in.
