It's not about the actual cost of remembering - it's the unnecessary costs as stated in posts if they read.

Perhaps you would list these "unnecessary costs". A few refreshments for dignitaries, veterans and family members surely can't be the issue?

Im not the DTC maybe they could list the costs for you that can be not afforded in this time of history and extreme debt with the council making cuts to the common man and putting council tax up. Why do people think you have to spend others money because it is taken and freely available for plonkers to spend. This is not about the men who died is it, its the people who want to spend public money then use it and including feeding the fat elite. Show me where the family members are also on this? If any of those are alive since 1918 Ill give them a bottle drink myself. It is obvious some people do not value people's money that stuffed into pots for the taking for any reason.

Parade at Dover and the ringing of the Zeebrugge Bell at the Town Hall. Bit of a rough edit, but here it is.
A particularly poignant commemoration this year, falling as it does on the 100th Anniversary of the Zeebrugge Raid that cost the lives of many. This parade followed a commemorative service earlier in the morning at St James Cemetery the last resting place of sailors and marines that would never see their homes again. The extent of this days commemoration is larger than usual because of that. It is not the same every year.

Maybe time to look at this from an alternative angle although not the right one in my opinion.
Why begrudge a little bit of pomp and excitement to those who could not care less about the actual meaning by having a parade through our streets. The wonderful Marines band and those smart marching sailors must surely have brightened a few peoples lives as they went about their probably boring day.
Definitely worth the relatively small amount it would have cost when you consider the enjoyment given.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

I agree with the bands are lovely the input of them was great, would be nice to see all the children who schools could have made little flags etc with them also get them to lined up along the way also would have been wonderful and free. Maybe some free refreshments of water, orange for the little ones or anyone not costing a lot but showing some kindness and good spirit to the common people and it is them who really matter because they did not have to attend but did. As you say Jan 'bit of pomp and excitement to those who could not care less about the actual meaning'. Its not that I am against it all but could have had a lot more thought and lot less cost and some of that cost going to the common people turning up. If this town wants to make such occasions think about it a lot more and find ways to do it without huge costs and load of money spent on only certain people.
