  Well I did have my suspicions! I note that, whilst the use of Ashford is quoted as being customs clearance again, the piece is quiet on how the trucks actually get there.

  The Irish border has always been a problem for the EU regarding trade control.
  
  Sticking plaster solutions have never worked, so hence the current shenanigans.
  
  A ‘soft’ Irish border was a good earner for smugglers in the past and I first realised the true extent of it’s illicit use many years ago when my employer bought out another company.
  
  I discovered during the process that some scams were also being operated by bona fide companies, quite successfully too!
  
  So I suspect that perhaps the EU concern is more to protect their trade than the peace process.

  The good news: visitors to the UK will not be able to reclaim VAT (on purchases made here) at the frontier as they leave - so another potential reason for tourist queues is avoided.   So outbound queues avoided but (I bet) inbound ones created. Red and green lanes, anyone?

  Coincidently, juxtaposed people controls get a mention from Mr Gove: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54260470 (same article as RH's) "There also remains a risk of continuing disruption caused by Schengen controls being applied rigorously at the juxtaposed controls at the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel," the document says.
  
  I suppose that's true in the context of a 'reasonable worst case scenario', since the French have been known to understaff controls and to apply them to 100% of freight drivers (as is their right, of course); normally they do neither.

  You hear a lot about a deal with the EU on reduced tariffs, but rarely about certification of origin of goods if a deal is struck. I miss Howard on this thread too.
