Spiteful action - they blame pensioners for voting Tory and keeping them out of office for years so this is their revenge. They forget that pensioners have younger relatives who are equally unhappy with this tactic. Next will be single person council tax relief. This will all surely come back to haunt them. I do hope so.
Many of us older people remember living through previous Labour administrations and how disastrous it was. Takes years to recover- but meanwhile Blair feathered his own nest very nicely thank you!

I have never seen so much uproar re Winter Fuel Allowance .We need to ensure we have a Health Service fit for purpose.i have friends who go on expensive holidays etc but still expect a winter fuel allowance .I m not able to get the allowance as I’m just above the thresh hold.I recall my child hood we had a heated house brick placed in the bed and removed of course when we went to bed.I was brought up tough. We huddled round the range to keep warm .Wooly home made slippers and woolly jumpers.Brought up tough .In winter months the snow would drift across the fields Webhad to dig a path way around our house to get to the toilet.Newspaper used no toilet paper ,

We do have a
Health service fit for purpose Sue it is the health services administration that's totally unfit.
Would you like me to fetch you a brick around to keep you warm this winter? My parents don't need it anymore they have moved into the 21st century

Thank you for your kind offer of a brick.Yes I agree it’s the administration needs looking at. I have relatives who work in the Health Service.Trouble is now a days they have to dot the eyes and cross the T s always some one ready to take them to court.Expection is high these days. The same if you are in the teaching profession.Lot of time filling in reports etc.Teachers work long days not just the time in the class room .

It would be informative to see a comparison of pensioner deaths by hypothermia pre- and post-1997.

I am one of the lucky ones who does not rely on the WFA because we went without (holidays etc) so we could have a decent private pension in our old age, I will no longer be able to donate mine to local charity as I did in the past. Luckily everyone will still get that ineffectual £10 Xmas bonus.
As for the NHS we can no longer expect the excellent service we used to get even 10yrs ago unless it is a real emergency, I have not seen a doctor from my practice for years despite having heart failure. I now get an occasional call from their very nice pharmacist who arranges blood pressure and other tests. Poor management from top to bottom is the cause for allowing expensive grandiose schemes that never come to fruition, Nightingale hospitals, destroyed PPE that could have gone to care homes or schools.

One can argue over whether the withdrawal of my WFA was necessary or not, but the sum of money involved (a few hundreds) pales into insignificance compared with the dent in my pension fund (rather more thousands) thanks to Ms Truss.

There seems to me little to be gained by harking back to the 1950’s/60’ . I experienced a similar childhood as described earlier by Sue. But surely as a society we need to be moving forwards, which includes a right to be comfortable in our own homes. We are in the 21st century and we shouldn’t be expecting any our elderly population to be living in fear of using their heating. I don’t disagree that it should be targeted at the most needy, but this has been hurriedly implemented without considering those who are only a few pounds above the threshold. I would have had more respect for Government if they had thought this policy through more carefully- it feels like something that has been cobbled together on the back of a fag packet!
There are pensioners who are living comfortably- I consider myself in that situation but it doesn’t stop me from having grave concerns for those who are living in dire circumstances and do not have the means , support or resources to improve their lives. The Government keeps talking about “working people “ but our elderly were once part of that demographic and they don’t deserve to be tossed aside.

I do enjoy your posts Arthur.I agree with much you say .My main concern is the NHS.I have spent the past year with friends who are ill .My main problem is the fall I experienced recently so my fingers are poorly but I’m always positive.Intry not to be political.Positive always.Yes we must not live in the past but the old community spirit is sadly lacking. It is colder tonight but I’m lucky to have a warm dressing gown no heating on..

It's those just above the threshold that are concerning so many.
Badly thought out, together with awful PR from it .
Starmer reliant on the majority .

I do not believe this was a spur of the moment decision by Labour, I think it was thought about and planned months ago by someone high up but kept quiet for obvious reasons.
Neil has replied but he has no power to alter Westminster plans, his private view will make about as much difference as those of any of us who post here.

Yet Starmer admitted yesterday that there had been no 'impact assesment' in spite of the fact that Labour had previously claimed that withdrawing the allowance would lead to an extra 4,000 deaths?
As with Milliband's net-zero policy, they are shooting from the hip without thinking about the inevitable unintended consequences.

The Labour Government have postponed Hospital building in Our NHS but have given £10 Billion to combat climate change overseas.....
