Actually Brian, Keith is probably not too far off the mark in what he says. Even if you take out of the equation the contribution that we will have to give the EU in respect of the situation in Ukraine, only very recently have our masters in Brussels demanded from us an additional £2.4 billion in order to help plug a massive black hole in the EU budget due to their own mismanagement and overspending on projects in poorer member countries such as Greece, Bulgaria and Romania.
Yet more money given away from our own hard pressed tax payers that would be better utilized in this country.
Possibly this would not have been reported in the Daily Mirror?

strong words from our foreign secretary but he doesn't really say anything other than the russians are in crimea and have little intention of leaving.

They have NO intention of leaving Mr Mcsweeny. Us Europeans will also pay the Ukrainian's gas bill to provide more euros for the Russian mafia........Great Britain?

I agree with Heike. Having lived through the first Gulf war under regular Scud attack without mishap, I have many anecdotes about over-reaction by the meeja.
PS Egypt is still statistically one of the safest tourist destinations, while Florida is more dangerous than Colombia.

Howard, why don't you start a thread about govt (at every level) profligacy. We can discuss ipads, surveys, foreign aid, home office bonuses etc etc etc.
There'd be no need for that ghastly word "austerity" if the money was managed responsibly.

doubtless you are referring to the government wanting local councillors to have dedicated ipads david.
just a storm in a latte cup in my view, technology is taking over from paperwork and that will continue to spread and the initial amount spent is not that great.
overseas aid is just a sweetener for getting british companies contracts and never helps people that need help - so the argument there is whether enough tax comes back to the exchequer to make it worthwhile, somehow i doubt it.
home office bonuses are quite laughable in my view.

Overseas aid is a mechanism to achieve the transfer of money from poor people in rich countries to rich people in poor countries.

Exactly Peter, the main reason I would like to see Overseas Aid ended except in a real emergency like drought, earthquake, tsunami or any other disaster.

Quote [Heike said:- I am sure other countries follow suit. So for them media is a brilliant tool to control the mass of people and the crimea situation is just another of many ... sadly. ] unquote.
Suggesting the events is a media battle Heike is a little too simplistic. Perhaps the focus has been deliberately centred on this area as a more sinister diversion from Russia's real intentions!
Using their nuclear capabilities so close to home is not an option, so it could transpire that the Ukraine is being used as a catalyst to trigger a hidden agenda. I hope that I am wrong but the weak response from other countries can only boost their confidence and determination.
They have also been laundering vast amounts of money in Middle Eastern countries, so freezing their assets is not a problem for them.
This is being operated blatantly in areas that are also strategic bases for the UN and NATO.....this shows their lack of concern for the sanctions that they are being 'threatened' with and the extent of their ambitions.

that was in 1945 keith, things have changed since then.
i have no problem with russia or russians themselves heike, just the megalomaniac in charge, the post above from bob suggests that other countries should be concerned about events.

Nothing to do with us we can not get our own house in order let alone any others so the UK should keep out of not only this one but others around the world to.

call him a megalomaniac. Which without a doubt he is for many !
But thinking of his moves and motives (interest) is only fair, considering the outcry of the EU ??? As their themselves having a great interest in Ukraine... there has to be. Surely you can see the interest of the EU in this? They not acting for the ukrainian People, they acting of their resources and ability of the area. ( especially a interest of the US too as they interest intend to add their base there.
well keep reading up on this ... and lets see what the outcome will be. I do know these Sanctions they want to put in place are silly and wont work. Its a big LOL for Mr P.

Whilst the rest of the world look for self determination the crimeans have voted to be sucked in by a super power.
love the wording on the ballot paper but at least they got something of a referendum which is more than we are likely to get.
