22:3930986it finally transpires that the election in that unfortunate country was officially bent.
the president and his mates refuse to accept this.
do we, and other countries, continue to send our troops to this dangerous place?

07:2830997Howard - what exactly has a bent Government in Afghanisatn got to do with the presence of our troops? That is nothing new, better someone sympathetic to the west than the Taliban after all. Do you want the Taliban to get their hand on Pakistans nuclear arsenal as well? That ultimately is the crux of the problem in that part of the world.

09:4231004Barry if we are there to protect Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, why doesn't the West neuteralise it?

09:4331005The reputation of the armed forces is being tarnished by right wing political extremists a group of former military leaders has warned.
The former heads of the army are amongst those that have put their name to a letter accusing those who seek to hijack the good name of Britains military.Although it doesn't name the BNP they in turn have accused the signatories of remaining silent about the scandal of MP's expenses.

09:5531007Marek, that is a clear reference to the BNP use of Armed Forces imagary, they have also in the past tried hijacking Churchill and the Union Flag and must not get away with it.
Ken - the only way would be by force, invasion, air strikes etc against a friendly Government. We need a stable and friendly Pakistan as a bulwark against the Taliban.
Howard - we are there because of the need to have a stable pro-west Government in Afghanistan. Were we and the rest of NATO to pull out then the Taliban would seize power and Afghanistan would revert to a training camp for terrorists. The Taliban campaign to destabilise Pakistan would also be boosted placing their nuclear arsenal at risk of falling into the hands of terrorists. Then, of course the anti-western terrorists would take heart and step up their campaign to destroy western culture and extend Sharia law to the west. Afghanistan is the front line in this fight and we cannot afford to lose and if that means propping up a corrupt Government and training their army until they can take over then so be it.

11:4531010Barry Thank you for your response which I accept. A couple of years ago in a previous life I had dinner with a serving brigadier who said 'that Blair and Bush would eventually be proved right in their decision to engage the Taliban in Afganistan', and I believe him(the brigadier)implicitly.

16:4631019I heard an Army rep on radio 4 inthe car this morning talking about the armed forces image being hijacked - he was so very dignified and intelligent, and resisted with courtesy and charm all of the interviewers attempts to provoke and misinterpret . Such a good ambassador for the forces, as many of them are.

17:2531025What a wonderful irony that the Spitfire the BNP chose on it's election leaflet was one belonging to a Polish squadron. Great research there chaps.

17:5031027Phil, just to show just how utterly stupid the BNP are their website has a Union Flag shown upside down....
But more than that, in response to the Generals Nick griffin has issued a threat to former army chiefs Sir Richard Dannat and Sir Mike Jackson. I quote exactly an excerpt:
=====
"Those Tory generals who today attacked the British National Party should remember that at the Nuremburg Trials, the politicians and generals accused of waging illegal aggressive wars were all charged — and hanged — together.
=====
I just cant get over the sheer idocy of threatening to hang two leading members of the military establishment. They even spelt Nuremberg wrong and got General Sir Mike Jackson's name wrong.
And these are the people that PaulB is so politically worried about! Come on PaulB, these idiots are ripe for exposing for what they are. OK I suspect Griffin will come over all 'nice' or will try to on TV, but there is so much material to expose him for what he really is.

18:3131039I think Afghanistan was number 38 in the flags of the world bubble gum cards in the early 60s. Does this have any connection with the above troubles?

19:2731048You make a fair point there BarryW..however the gullibility of the general populace out there can not be underestimated. This is why leading Labour politicians/ministers have requested that the BBC take the man off Question Time, it not being regarded as the right venue. At this stage I dont want to see him taken off as the horse is already galloping out of the stable... and u-turns generally go down badly with the public.
Baroness Kennedy speaking on the Andrew Marr show last sunday reminded us all that Nick Griffin is a Cambridge educated man and a very persuasive speaker, she also thought Question Time was not the right venue, it being a family type easy access excessively simple- to- digest political show.
At this point I want it to happen now too, having been against it at the start..its become quite a curiosity and will attract a big audience. All tuning in to see how Nick Griffin goes down.
Its on Thursday Night around 10.30pm.

20:5931059getting back to the original topic, a former commander of our forces in afghanistan, colonel richard kemp took my view on propping up a corrrupt regime.
