What is the point of giving people civic amenities.....................
..............................if they abuse them?

Terry am I in the right place? Is that the area next to Morrisons which was revamped, redone and opened with a blaze of publicity. Money was spent by both DDC and DTC doing it up...and the Mayor at the time Sue Jones officially opened it along with various other bigwigs. I went along and got a few pictures for the frontpage as I remember. Great shame if it is.

i wasn't even aware of it being open to the public, never seen anyone in there.
as there are no measures taken to enforce the by-laws the above abuse will always take place.

Yes Paul, that's the place. CCTV on Morrisons might have helped. Locking it up won't help the littering of course.

What a crying waste. Howard is right - what is the point of spending money on good amenities if we don't have the will and drive to protect them. By "we" I mean not only us punters but the people paid to do so.

I have never seen anyone in there either, mainly I think because most but obviously not all, think the place has no access. I do not believe the problem is as given, more likely some other reason entirely.

I'm afraid that this is like the bench fiasco..just because a few thoughtless minority the council close it to the majority. Giving in to the louts rather than trying to resolve the problem.

Happier days, and only November 2010 I believe, the mayor at the time Sue Jones cutting the ribbon but the optimism didnt last long as we see.
Sadly so many of these things Ive attended over the years, launches etc, doing photographs and so on, most seem to come to nothing in the end. They just fizzle out when the cameras stop rolling as it were. sad.

I suppose this means it won't be maintained either, the ground will just go back to square one and become an overgrown rubbish tip as it was before. What a waste of everyone's time and money thanks to a thoughtless few. Nothing surprises me any more.
May I just point out that part of the function of local reps, paid or otherwise, is to maintain the drive and will to keep these initiatives fresh? Hello?

Was there a regular cleaning and clearing schedule set up do we know ? It seems a bit over-optimistic if nothing was set up to keep it looking good as the day it opened.
It's always a case of the few idiot brain-deads spoiling things for the silent majority - as Ian will testify.

i don't think there was, the grass always seemd to be too high and that helped in trapping litter.

i have seen people go in there around 8 am with dogs [various breeds] along with young kids.shame it was abused so much.
I suspect the people with dogs are not also carrying black plastic bags..........

Jolley's Pet-Store is close by and Morrisons couldn't be any closer (for poo-bags).
I'm surprised Morrisons didn't have a hand in the maintenance as it was right outside their cafe/restauarant, so people looking out over it all day long.
To a company like Morrisons, or even sharing the cost with the Town Council, 2 hour's work a week to keep it clean was peanuts, not sure why nothing was set up.

Although the area is next door to Morrisons Roger the land was/is actually owned by Netto, I remember this being mentioned on the day, so in theory anyway nothing to do with Morrisons. As I remember it was supposed to be an ongoing project with further improvements scheduled to come along at a steady pace with Dover Town Council in the driving seat...although various other bodies were also involved.

Thanks PaulB.
I appreciate it is owned by Netto -now ASDA, but it is right outside the Morrison's cafe, so would have thought they would have wanted their customers to have something pleasant to look out on to, not long grass, piles of dog-poo and litter.

Morrisons would not have legal access to somewhere owned by a rival company.
I suspect that Asda have something to do with the closure. Not sure but they might have cleaned the little bit of river by their shop, the rubbish that appeared after the recent clearing has gone and the little patch of grass has been cut.

Judging from the amount of litter Asda left behind to blow around Pencester Gardens after their presentation there I would not hold out too much hope of their clearing up.
Clearing the garden is a no-win situation for the council. If they do (and there is a contract for grass cutting and a litter collection for the bins provided) people will complain about the cost of clearing up after those who should know (or should be taught to know) better. If they don't people will complain about them not spending. Where is the cut off point between public spending and public destruction?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.
