11:299336This might be a question for Phil. A barrage has been placed across the Dour at Charlton Green. If it's job is to catch the various bits of detritus that get thrown in by the public then it's doing it's job. However, I thought that the last clear-up of the year organised by WCCP has already taken place, so will this rubbish remain here until next year?
Also I thought that I might put some pictures up to see if these go missing (X marks the spot) as well as some others that I have posted!

20:169349yes brian, i saw that yesterday on the way to the rally.
i shudder to think what visitors would make of it.
incidentally, i notice that some large stones have been placed in the dour close to the bus office, in a semi circle.
our local wild fowl seem to fond them rather spiffing, and plant themselves on them.
whether they will seem so keen after being struck by an empty can of tramp juice is another story.

08:169363I've sent those comments (removing names etc.) to waste services at DDC (waste@dover.gov.uk); I've also included the photos.
I have asked them to clear out the rubbish from the various locations along the river.
If any of you notice rubbish in the river, please email waste services at the above email address and they will (hopefully quickly) sort it out.
This is an ongoing problem with people who walk close to the river (and those who make a special journey there to dump their rubbish); there is just no pride in where they live.
Waste services adopt a "broken window" attitude, but you guys need to report it as soon as you see any rubbish, otherwise it will build up.

11:519369Sorry Terry, I've no idea about the planks - but then I'm only a WCCP volunteer once a month and wouldn't expect to hear what the EA are up to anyway. I must admit it does seem odd to have what appears to be a rubbish trap installed and then not actually retrieve the rubbish, the accumulation of flotsam looks ghastly, worse than if it had not been installed. I just want to get in there with a pole and net!
Most likely the planks were installed as a perching spot for birds, the accumulation of rubbish there being an unfortunate side effect, hence no apparent plan in place to clean it.
You are right in that we will not be retrieving any rubbish until Spring next year as we are not allowed to get in in case of disturbing the trout spawning. For what it's worth the WCCP are not allowed to touch the vegetation and are only allowed to clear rubbish, conversely the EA only deal with vegetation.
There was a brief news report on BBC about the EA work, but I couldn't find anything on the EA website unfortunately.

12:149372Thanks for that Phil, I only asked you as you seem to have your ear close to the ground, or in this case, the water.
That area really needs sorting out as far as vegetation is concerned, but as you say, that's down to the EA.

15:479379I know exactly where the planks ( railway sleepers )have come from and must admit they are there by accident. nothing to do with any authority. I have to say though that all of the rubbish that is building up would only end up in the harbour any way.
The recent floods which are now worse since the E.A let everything overgrow have caused a lot of damage, flood water used to go as high as the path edge but now goes a lot higher and last weeks flood was the highest I have ever seen causing 3 of my neighbours gardens to subside into the river causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and repairs.
Dover had its chance over the years for the Dour to be looked after properly and constantly, BUT NO ONE LISTENED.
Here endeth the reading.

17:579385Are these planks not secured then? They certainly don't seem to have drifted into that position, unless they were fixed surely the current would have swept them away by now. Someone must have put them in unofficially for whatever reason.
Go on, spill the beans.

21:359399The railway sleepers came from Webbers fall at the back of Halfords and after last weeks heavy rain a far larger build up of water occured causing them to be washed away and they settled where they did by accident, it surprised me they got that far, 130mtr?
The crap under Halfords car park must be beyond belief by now, but hey not my problem now. I don't give a toss.
This posting was made just so you could sleep at night and not worry about who put the railway sleepers there.........Mother nature.

08:169430This is the short answer I've had from DDC
Good Afternoon Cllr Walkden
I have contacted WCCP who have not put the barrage across the dour at Charlton Green. The clearing of the underpass is carried out by the Environment Agency, and D.H.B.
Sita, the Council's contractors remove the rubbish, know nothing of the stones close to the bus office in Pencester Rd. I have emailed Paul Marshall from the Environment Agency concerning these area's and will contact you as soon as I have the information.
When I get further info. I'll let you know.

12:049442Where is our Doverpride, this is a B****y disgrace, we are talking about improving Dover for the community, I cannot understand why some local people continue to use the Dour as a personal dumping ground which ruins it for everyone else.
The powers that be need to clean up their act and the river, you would think they would keep the only river in Dover clean of the rubbish that is building up. This is basic 'grass roots' cleanliness, we are not talking rocket science here!

20:249460i did not think that the stones were a problem!
they appeared at the same time as the environment agency.
they are certainly not unsightly and the ducks definitely see them as a plus.

07:179466Quite agree Colette
With all the millions being invested in Dover, I find it incredible that they haven't appointed a river and park warden. It's like spoiling the ship for ha'poth of tar.
Some one could be out all day walking or cycling the length of the river checking for rubbish and litter (fly-tipping) and illegal fishing (wrong time of year), no fishing-licenses etc.
I'm sure it would be a close-run thing - that the fines for the various misdemeanours, would make up their wages.
There would need to be agreement that any litter found would be cleared up immediately though and this warden would need the authority to issue enforceable fines.
They could also keep an eye on the various parks we have, even if it was only the strategic ones. Any illegal activities then a phone call would be made to a policeman who would come straight away - sorry, that's where it falls down, no coppers. Oh well. just a thought or two.
Roger
