Off the top of my head: George Eliot, George Orwell, George Sand (enough Georges), Mark Twain, Ellis Bell, Voltaire, Hugh McDiarmid, Woody Allen, John le Carré, Lewis Carroll, B. Traven, Molière, Stendhal, and I'll even throw in Yukio Mishima, Ayn Rand and Hergé for the 'right-minded'. None of these to be taken seriously? Seriously?

Why is poor old Droid, of limited and artificial intelligence, suddenly being singled out for this attention?
Seems a convenient way to detract from the message. Personal attacks and discussion of individuals stops HERE.

Back to Dover's pubs,, what the f,,,is happening in Dover Wetherspoons??
it's dirty, you have to beg them to clean the tables, the upholstery looks like it all needs taking to the tip.
the food portions look to be getting smaller ??
I went in 2 Fridays ago at 7,30 pm, to be told they were not serving food as all the tables had been Reserved for somebody ??? and on a f,,,,ing Friday night,,,joe public all being turned away.
think they need to send in the Canterbury managers to bring it up to scratch

You missed out the most important one - Tommy Robinson.

If people posting on here prefer to remain anonymous, then why shouldn't they? I'll pass on the pompous "I'm out in the open, I do MY bit" claptrap, if that's OK. Of the list of things in Droid's post, I struggle to find one where a single individual, working alone, could make a real difference unless they were a billionaire with zero interest in other activities to occupy them.
The dignitaries love to present their altruism to the outside world. At the end of the day, it hides the fact that they're just businessmen doing what businessmen do - make money. That's OK - just leave off the public spirited hogwash a bit, can we?
And just to conclude on anonymity, I've had it forced upon me. I couldn't post on this forum otherwise. Having the temerity to raise sensitive issues on here is only permissible if you don't raise questions about local supposed dignitaries and their prickly sensitivity to any hint of criticism.

What he said.
Moreover they should make up their minds.
Don't preach about how others should not criticise, and get involved instead, and then when others do try to get involved, put them down, spy on them, lord it over them, snitch on them, talk about them behind their backs, exclude them from the loop, disempower them, try to bully them and generally figure out ways to get rid of them and stop them contributing in case they get in on the money, power, and glory.

Back to pubs again.
The Dublin in River now has a builders sign up, so presumably is being developed/demolished.

Can we keep this on topic from now on - you're welcome to start another thread if you'd like to continue discussing other things. Thank you!

Noticed earlier that one of windows at the Golden Lion was boarded up, hopefully just a one off incident.

I think you could be correct, now we need the name of the one I was thinking about.
Dover had so many at one point, but that was because any retired sailor had the right to open one, at least that is what I was told many years ago.

The pub at the cruise terminal was formerly two pubs, the Cinque Port Arms and immediately adjoining it the Rose & Crown. The other Rose & crown was about 4 doors up from "a glad and sorry" shop called Blundells.

Outside Dover in the real villages, have just seen that the Crown at Eythorne is available to let from Punch Taverns and the ex-White Horse further on has new houses built at the back where the skittle alley was.
