Shepherd Neame are also getting rid of the Bricklayers in Shepherdswell, so there may be more?

#1, Howard, Sheps still own it but they have leased it out on a free of tie contract which means it's a free house.

Your knowledge of the licensing business is well respected Peter and I sincerely the couple that have taken over the "Lord Nelson"well. On the subject of "tied houses" I can remember reading about 15 years ago that they were illegal under EU law.
Such a pity that things were not followed up as we might have a few more small pubs still operating.

It has never been a particularly good pub. Successive licensees have been unsuccessful in driving the clientele upmarket and it has remained tatty for the 15 years I have known it. It used to be notorious as the hangout for the underage drinkers and it has never really shaken off that reputation. And when a tenant succeeded in banning the under-18s, they waited outside and called Crimestoppers every time a punter got in his car and drove away. Not brilliant for trade.

We looked at it back in the 90s and decided it was in need of a lot of money to bring it up to scratch, If I remember correctly the trading figures were not very good even then.

Have seen on twitter that the Park Inn is closing on Sunday.

Can't say that I'm surprised, I think the days of large pubs with equally large overheads are numbered unless they are in a real prime city location. If I remember correctly they only changed management a few months back.

The Park Inn is being taken over by the people who have the Cricketers, The Archer, Funky Monkey & The Duchess.

Yes I knew that, I thought it was still under wraps.

Apparently the Port of Call have decided to let a company called Burger Brothers do their catering Monday to Saturday. Social media has gone into a frenzy about another chain delivering junk food but having checked them out this will be only their third outlet and the menu looks rather good.

I am one of those who was disparaging about this with the following comment..............."Oh whoopee!!!!!! Just what the town needs, another establishment selling high calorie junk food.".......I have not changed my mind as to me a burger with cheese in a bun as in the picture together with chips is not a healthy meal however tasty it might be.
Nearly all our reasonable priced food outlets in the town together with proposed new ones serve high calorie foods, do we really need another, yes I know there there are exceptions.

I would tend to agree Jan, though if I'm going to have a burger and chips I prefer to know the ingredients are the best available and locally sourced.

We have eaten at the Deal establishment and the food was very good. I am not a burger fan generally, but this was good quality food, not junk.

That's a shame. We used to enjoy a glass or two with the superb Tapas they used to offer, sitting outside during the Summer. A burger and chips doesn't really appeal so we'll be going elsewhere I'm afraid.

I see from the paper that landlord of The Castle also now has The Albion/First And Last.

Last I heard was that the "First and Last" was converted into a hostel at least 5 years ago. Paul currently runs a good hostel when the ceiling doesn't fall in on the residents.
