The good thing about the new Gym being open 24 hours is there is less likelihood of vandalism late at night.

Both service access to M&S, Next etc off Townwall Street are marked by a pair of round concrete pillars.
Here they are being 'dressed' by alternate layers of brick and flint.

Does anyone know if the named nine businesses, that are in the town centre at the moment, will be closing down? If so I can't imagine how sad our "real" town would look

I second that Jan, my only regret is that I won't get to experience the finished product...Lived in the district for 20 years waiting for it to be completed, now residing in Christchurch NZ

A view of the St. James development taken from Dover's Western Heights on 3rd October 2017.
The four turrets on the M&S unit have been enclosed awaiting insulating before the outer cladding is put in place. Glazing has been installed on the side of M&S and partial brick sets laid below the yellow brickwork to the western end of the building. Further back a crane is still working on the Travelodge with scaffolding now removed from the southern end revealing a clean off white facade, and the Block A service area (off Townwall Street) is being levelled off.
To the bottom right of the photograph is the tarmac area that in part once former the 'slip' used by westbound A20 traffic to avoid the former York Street roundabout - now just a flat area fenced off against the De Bradelei car park. I wonder if this might be the location of the envisaged 'land bridge' that could connect the waterfront with the town (i.e. across the A20)?

The turrets on the M&S unit are being insulated and encased in black coloured facia.
Workmen improvise a step to reach the top of the cladding whilst support is offered from below.
Meanwhile more scaffolding is removed from the Travelodge

How sad that DTIZ is not living up to expectations .,as an X Councillor I can only say the end result is not half as good as I expected..DDC has had no Imput as to what shops are coming to DTIZ where is your Waterstones decent clothes shop Marks Textiles no more ..A shop that sells household goods? So much potential wasted What it means with all these shops relocating it's further to walk.

It's not the finished article yet as shown by Iceland signing up only now, many retailers wait until they see who else has joined until they make a decision. I wouldn't be surprised if Waterstones decided to take a unit.

Well, as a resident of Dover I'm itching to give it a go and am sure that I can manage the walk from Pencester. Mind you, I'm not an ex-Councillor and neither do I yet qualify for a 'free' bus pass from, say, Pencester to Canterbury or Sandwich, so perhaps I'm more open to local shopping/entertainment.
(Not my real name.)

Quite right button .Just saying approaching eighty for me it's a long walk .what Dover needs is more shops like the Curousity shop a decent ladies fashion shop .More gift and art shops .I shall not carry bags of food from that area and then face a twenty give minute bus ride home on a crowded bus .

When I stated I'm an X Councillor that does not refer to status.I sat on committees at the. start of the project and had some influence however it's not the result I expected. The last four years of my tenure I did not sit on any committes that had any influence as A Chairman of the Council is non political and impartial .

Not quite as ancient as Sue but getting close.
So far there is not one shop that will make me visit more that a couple of times a year, unfortunately my internet shopping will continue.

I still think Wilkinson's would do well in Dover whether it be in St James or the soon to be empty M & S unit. Failing that Primark unless they think it would affect their Folkestone outlet badly.
