The Chinese visit the City of Oxford in their droves and many live there so obviously they need somewhere to spend their money and it certainly does have the affluent tourist driven Cotswold area to draw the customers from.
Those design labels can easily be found in London so why on earth would the well heeled travel who live there travel into Kent, people tend to shop in the nearest shopping area to them. Even when young and living in London I would not have thought of going elsewhere especially as I had a 10% discount in Harrods and its associated stores.

Britain's Best and Worst Seaside Towns by visitor survey. Notably Dover doesn't even get enough visitors to make the survey.

The madness continues:-
'There are concerns that councils are “dumb money” – paying over the odds for failing businesses'.

St James' Dover, has 18 out of 26 units filled, says manager Geoff Hobbs-East.
(Sure am glad MY pension fund doesn't own it!)

I still have not been down there as only M&S are of any interest, so have continued doing my shopping at Morrisons.
I wonder how many others have not bothered after the first few weeks of interest.

Gosh that's a surprise. No one on this forum ever thought it would be another white elephant like the White Cliffs Experience, The Big Screen etc

It seems to me that Dover Forum users take a delight in bad news and want any new venture in the town to fail. If only so they can gloat ' told you so'. It is disappointing that there are empty units, unsurprising though with the general decline in retail shopping. I love St James especially the M&S Foodhall. I hope enough people in the area will use the shops there so that they prosper and we all benefit from having a more vibrant shopping area.

This Dover Forum user was not taking "a delight in bad news", I just wish there was a shop there that would make me want go to that part of town.

Yes. Because we are always TOLD what we want and what would be great for the town. From bland shopping centres to stupid water features. When we tell DDC and people who don't even live here, like Neil Wiggins, that we need better ideas and less wasted money, we are told not to be negative. Then when these white elephants fail we are told 'use it or lose it'. Beggars belief!

Have you been to the Stembrook shopping arcade? There are some interesting shops/ stalls there for presents and unique items. I have bought some beautiful handmade lampshades from Gaby Redman, gifts and gardening items from Gardeners Cottage and Fair Trade items from the market bit. It needs better signage from St James, Market Square etc. I don't think visitors to Dover would find it.
