I read an interesting article on here yesterday, regarding a German author living over here, and writing a book on football between our two nation`s. Apparently, he tells us, that the germans would prefer us to win over most other countries in Europe, but they do not quite understand all the 1966 hysteria which we over here always bring up. ( We being the empty heads of the media?). On the other hand, if they see a dodgy goal in their country, maybe not over the line, but given all the same, they call it a wembley goal. Anyway, I do hope we win today, but in the event we don`t, I hope Germany wins the rest of their matches, and as a consolation, they`ll be a drink for any forumite on here, as it`s my sweepstake team at the White Horse. And on that subject, I`d like to mention that I`m only in there once or twice a week, but I`m not a drinker as such, but have found it a very quiet pleasant place to natter to other`s (incl rare forumite`s), and have an odd drink or two.

May the best team win, though it doesn't seem to be the case with this entertaining world cup. I felt sorry for the old U S of A though, it's a shame that we didn't draw the Ghanaians, it would have been a corker of a match. Lets hope that todays match will be one to remember, whoever wins

The first match I`ve actually sat down and watched, and I`m very saddened that in this day and age, there`s nothing in place for football relating to border line decisions on goal scoring, though in this case, it was a goal without question. How can these arseholes at FIFA who govern the sport, sleep tonight knowing that the whole world has seen what a bunch of idiot`s they really are. I never had much time for them when I use to watch the sport more regular. There should be a panel of observer`s in place to overule a referee`s decision.

Ah Well, the best team won, but in this technical age I feel sorry for Lampard as that WAS a goal and may have been a different result in the end, the biggest defeat for England ever

That`s right Barry, and we`ll never know what the real outcome would have been if that second goal was given. Shame on FIFA!

I'm bamboozled, they use the technical advantages available for Wimbledon, American football and Rugby to my knowledge why not football especially when you take into account the amount of money that is ploughed in to soccer

As I said above, this was the first game I actually sat down and watched, (bar the last 15 minutes). Can someone tell me please who Germany play next and when? Thanks.

Simples "No National Pride & No Passion" a bit like some of the non football fans who come on here.
Fabio Capello should get a one way ticket back to Italy and we should find a English Manager who knows how to get the best out of English players, unlike today when they were no more than overpaid individuals who had not got a clue.

i thought the problem today was too much passion, they clearly played with their hearts and not their heads.
the manager has a great record in bringing the team through the qualifiers, first time we have qualified with games to spare.
he had no luck with losing the captain and best defender on the first training day of the tournament and the back stabbing from the previous captain.

Will motorist`s and other`s be flying their flags at half mast now or tomorrow, or have they already ripped them off in embarrassment and anger?

Good post Howard, well said.
I don't want to see goal-line technology because it won't stop there and eventually we'll end up watching something akin to American Football. For me, that's a big NO THANKS.
They say bad decisions even out over time, well it's taken 44 years for it to do so, so no complaints from me. I do feel sorry for Frank Lampard though.

there was another outrageous decision in the evening game, how the officials missed the offside with the second argentine goal beggars belief.

After seeing that goal, along with the rest of the world, and not being acted upon as it was so obvious, I wouldn`t give a shi* what other technology came along. As for me, world cup football has gone down to a low point, and this appalling incident will be shown and talked about for year`s to come. It was like a criminal performing a serious act in front of cctv`s for all to see, then a police officer there at the time, looking the other way and pretending it didn`t happen. Again, SHAME on FIFA.

your anti british rant in post 7 fails to mention that two brits head the world championship table.
i bet you are gutted about that and waiting for both of them to crash.

The thing Brian says about rugby is valid: Rugby (league or union, it matters little) is a much tougher game. I will say that I think Union is not the game it was - not by a long way - since it went pro, but the players are fitter than ever before and the camaraderie among supporters really make it so more enjoyable than football.
What I don't like to see is using a poor World Cup campaign as a reason to run Great Britain down; the fact is that we were beaten by a much better team in Germany - that doesn't mean that everything to do with this country is wrong and needs slagging off. What I believe needs to happen is that we play football with pace and passion, as it's played every week in our domestic leagues, and not the continental way that the continentals are going to be better at than us. I would also like to see a British manager as the foreigners used, Eriksson and Capello, have not proved a success.
I would acknowledge that Capello is not a stupid man, though - signing a two-year extension to his contract before the tournament wasn't a daft move, was it? The FA need to ask themseleves whether it wouldn't have been a better move to have waited until after the tournament and judged his performance on results, irrespective of whether AC Milan wanted Capello or not, before signing anything. It's a £12m mistake, in my view. Very expensive egg on some faces at the FA.
True friends stab you in the front.

Andy I thought that particular move by the FA was the most bizarre move in business terms that Ive ever heard of, and said so at the time. Offering a new contract before the initial contract had delivered, well that seems a very odd way to do business. Cleary these guys at the FA are ex-footballers or something and dont operate in the real world of business..much like many of our politicians it must be said.
Perhaps they thought England were going to win the World Cup and that if they had done so, the FA might have had trouble holding on to dear old Fabio. Whatever the reason anyway to sign a contract before the World Cup, in June in fact, is/was totally bananas. Yes it could be a very expensive mistake...but then these high flying super salaried earners dont know the value of money.

Anyway, I read on here today that the FIFA president, 74 year old Blatter, has apologised for the dis-allowed goal, and accepted it, but will not bend on the present rules. Move over Blatter old man, and let someone younger with guts have a go at your job.
