Dear Gary,
Thank you for contacting me and raising your concerns about local bus services in Dover and Deal.
Bus services are essential for connecting our communities, supporting our local economy, and ensuring that people across Dover and Deal can travel reliably. Yet, recent changes to our bus network have raised serious concerns, especially among those in Dover, Whitfield, River, and other communities dependent on frequent service. I want to be clear: these cuts are unacceptable, and I am committed to pushing for a fairer deal that prioritises the needs of our residents.
Many residents have expressed frustration over reductions in frequency and service adjustments, including the 61 and 64 routes, among others. A reduction from half-hourly to hourly service on the 64 route will impact those attending appointments at Buckland Hospital, and changes to the 61 route that bypass sections of Sandwich Road only add to the travel challenges many already face. I have heard from residents who could be stranded at home as a result of this change. Although I am slightly reassured that the new Fastrack route will include much of the 61 route in Whitfield, there remains a section that will only be served by a dial-a-ride service.
Also of concern is the 62 route no longer including The Linces, again leaving some residents stranded. I have been told that this is due to safety concerns around the road and parking situation. This is unacceptable—if a bus can’t safely travel the route, then we must also consider access for emergency vehicles. I have requested an urgent review of the road by KCC and Highways in search of a suitable solution.
In my recent meeting with Stagecoach representatives, I pressed for practical solutions to these issues. I urged them to consider all possible adjustments to avoid cuts, especially during peak times, when so many residents rely on buses to get to work, school, or essential appointments.
I am continuing to press that the additional funding that has been committed for Kent buses is used to improve the situation locally. I will be clearly outlining to Kent County Council what we need in Dover and Deal. After these recent unjust cuts to our services, I will be calling for affected routes to reopen, because without proper funding and attention to our local needs, our communities risk becoming even more isolated, leaving people who rely on public transport behind.
For now, an up-to-date list of changes to local Stagecoach services can be found here:

Public transport should be an accessible, sustainable, and dependable option for everyone in Dover and Deal. I’ll be holding further consultations with Stagecoach and KCC to make our case and ensure that any changes to services reflect the needs of our community.
Residents deserve better than cutbacks and reduced services. I am committed to fighting for a transport network that not only meets today’s needs but also lays a foundation for a stronger, greener future in Dover and Deal.
I will continue advocating for a bus service that serves us all and thank you again for reaching out and raising your concerns.
Kind regards,
Mike Tapp MP
