and thats right next to the bar elle, just right after a hard day in the library and museum.
I bought my HD projector from Projector Point and to this day I have not enjoyed such an amazing service - ever! The young lady was outstandingly helpful, she listened to my very specific and hugely demanding criteria, she asked all the right questions, and advised me about all the technical aspects that were missing from my knowledge. End result - I got the perfect projector for my needs, and enjoyed courteous, helpful and truly exemplary service from start to finish. I don't even know the woman's name but I do know British business would be so much better if there were more like her!

That's very good news of some very good service Rick.
There are some shops in Dover where good service is the order of the day, but it is only a few, sadly: we do need more of them.
Roger
I actually think that the general state of customer service in the UK is pretty poor. It's because of this that when we get a good one, it stands out so much. Really, shouldn't all customer service just be great no matter what?
I run my business based on amazing customer service. I won't lie, this can be very difficult on us at times and we do even have the odd slip-up but I operate based on how I like to be treated. One of my huge pet hates in life is poor customer service. Like when you want to spend a grand on a new TV and the shop assistant doesn't give a shit or doesn't have a clue about the products on sale, or those that don't follow up on problems properly, or those that don't even greet you with a simple polite smile when you walk in. To me, customer service isn't just a basic process of selling something to someone, it's an integral part of ensuring the customer has a good experience and walks away with a positive impression of that business. It's SO important that every business should take it a lot more seriously than many do!
I don't know if it's education and training, or that we as a nation have just got so used to it that we no longer care, but customer service in the UK needs to improve overall.
The experience I had with Projector Point was above and beyond what I would reasonably expect but that company (or at least that individual I dealt with) should win an award for their commitment to customer service. Even I learned a valuable lesson from that experience and now endeavour to meet that standard.

I agree absolutely 100% with you Rick, customer service should be above everything else.
Popped into Boots Canterbury yesterday and was served by an assistant who was over here from America. Her customer service skills were second to none and very natural too. Reminded me of my shopping sprees in Denver. I doubt we will ever reach those levels. One only has to look at U.S. companies over here, McD, BK, PH etc., their staff fall well short of the mark and if they can't do it, what chance at the Pound Shop? No disrespect to the Pound Shop.
And speaking of good service, how's this for a beacon of hope? I went to Burger King in Cheriton tonight with Claire and James only to be served by a junkie high as a kite on Heroine (classic symptoms) and then the place filled up with about 10 drunken yobs who started yelling abuse while the manager did sweet FA. Great place, can't recommend it highly enough. Sorry, scrap the words "highly enough" from that last sentence.
No Rick, quite the contrary, big it up mate. You never know, a few good words might just attract our similarly 'high' Chavtown residents and encourage them to relocate permanently to Cheriton.

I know it's a bit of forumite self-promotion, but I have to say that the service received at The White Horse and at Absolute Graphix is always first class; I know that they are both run by/owned by members of this forum, but I see nothing wrong in telling everyone about it - and I shall be in touch with Absolute Graphix this week regarding some London Road Community Forum stuff.
The other place I'd loike to plug is Eythorne Village Shop and Post Office - first class service in every respect; would that Pencester Post Office were half as good. I think they charge for smiling in there.
Finally, I'd like to promote The Fabric Fairy for good service, even if I do say so myself. I have an eBay rating of 15,000+ and have to say that good service is the cornerstone on which we work. I have plenty of competition out there in cyberspace, and the only way I can compete is on service.......if only all businesses were run on the same lines.
True friends stab you in the front.
Forumites to the fore!! Good thing, Andy - it is clear from what people post on here where they are coming from, and we are a decent bunch overall.
I think it is, as Rick said, that our standards have fallen and this is flagged up in many ways, customer care being one of them.
I have a mild dispute with the guy who owns the garden that backs onto mine. He rents out the rooms in the house he owns but doesn't live there, and has tarted the house and garden up but left a huge pile of crap at the end of his garden, which butts onto mine. It is damaging the (rather lovely and very old) wall and is unsightly. it took him over a year to respond to my very polite reach-outs, and he only responded then because I reluctantly suggested that lawyers might at some point be involved. I have been consistently civil, even when one of his tenants was openly hostile and blatantly rude when I popped round - for the first time - to see if I could find out who owned the house. Time was that when if a woman (or anyone) mentioned to a guy that the crap he had dumped at the end of his garden was nuisance, he would have apologised (none has yet been forthcoming from this one) and shifted it, because that would have been the polite thing to do. It might even have indicated that he gave a damn.
I should also mention that as I had trouble identifying who had dumped the crap I approached the estate agent who manages the tenancy and manages rental properties in this area. Bearing in mind I had been patient for over a year, I sent a letter and email and perhaps that was a little de trop. However, the response was offensive and trivialising and he clearly both didn't give a damn and didn't care who knew that he didn't give a damn. Customer care? I suspect he cannot spell it.
I mention these because I think they illustrate how far we have sunk in the courtesy arena, in business and at home. How much does it take to say sorry, and shift a pile of stuff if someone finds it to be a nuisance? How much does it cost to be polite in response to a query? Apologies and smiles, decent manners, cost nothing but are hardly valued now. A real shame, because they do oil the wheels and say a great deal about a person.
I will add that I am clear that no-one is identified in this!!
Thanks for those comments Andy. I seem to remember the Fabric Fairy...
Bern you are SO right. This weekend, a horrid driver yelled at my wife that she's a "f*****g retard" when it was the other driver that was at fault. I was in the car at the time, and it just shows what a vile sense of low worth many members of society have these days. I can categorically state that my wife, who is a very clever degree graduate who works in a high level of NHS management and is also the single most level-headed person on the planet bar NONE, is not a retard. If I knew the name of that retard, ass-hole driver, I would publish their name on here. Sadly, I don't. Let's hope that rancid little individual isn't in a customer care role!!!
