If one of the three mainstream parties (or two of them together) get in, they might reckon they have time to fall asleep. In reality they will be woken up!
Otherwise, sunny spells!

I succumb to the prospect of a Conservative governent a good while back, however the recent twists and turns have made me place my hopes on a hung parliament.
I feel at least this would expose the Conservatives in their inabilty to work in anyones interests other than their own. Why anyone would want to vote in a party that are so open about representing themselves before the people that voted them in is beyond me! This is why DC is so scared of this outcome, pretending it will stall important decisions, what he actually means is 'his decisions'. Coalition goverments work elsewhere in other countries and both Labour and LibDem would be more adaptable than the Conservatives (they talk about change but are least able for it..."oh please keep the hereditary peers, it's how it's always been").
Also the possiblity of a hung parliament could call the Queen's 'impartial' position into question. If Brown eventually stands down it is up to her to call for her next Prime minister from the hung parliament. How is she qualified to make this decision? I don't remember voting for her in our 'democracy'. Oh silly me she was just born into that position....just like hereditary peers, but she is impartial isn't she?...yeah right!

dt1
you will do well to remember that her majesty and all the aristocracy were appointed by god, not oiks like us.
not sure where posh barry stands in all this.
DT1 it is in the Tory manifesto that they will make the Lords an elected chamber. They confess to having an issue with the religious mob that sit in there, but otherwise they are up for the change.
I might also direct your attention to the Labour Party manifesto of 1997 where they promised to reform the Lords and make it an elected chamber. 13 years on and they still haven't done it. Why? Because the snivelling spinning crooks want their own peerages. Try to deny it.
With regard to Her Majesty, I think nearly 60 years of experience in these matters makes her better qualified probably than any other living person in the country. Of course, some would prefer to throw out the baby with the bathwater, whilst not having a clue as to what to put in its place.
As for the Tories looking after themselves, you may be right. But, when I ran pub 30 odd years ago, I used employ staff who I could be sure were fiddling, on the sound basis that if they were working hard for themselves, they were woking hard for me. With careful management I managed a very successful pub, The Cauliflower Hotel, Howard may know of it.

I doubt the Tories will reform anything, in much the same way that the Labour government have done nothing. Don't think for a second that I like 'New Labour' Sid, I think they're rubbish. I just won't be voting for a party that rely on a advertising campaign that places all effort in pointing out the falings of the current government but offers little in reform.
As for the Queen, I'm with Paine on this one
"There is something exceedingly ridiculous in the composition of monarchy; it first excludes a man from the means of information, yet empowers him to act in cases where the highest judgment is required."
And as for selfishness....er sorry I mean self-interest. There is still a myth about working hard and achievement, the remanence of the Protestant work ethic, that suggests you achieve, or are successful (something Tories measure in how much you earn). The truth is (and the Queen is a good example) that effort isn't always linked with achievement. So 'working hard for yourself' might be the exploiting the fact that it isn't in your own interest to work for 'what you are worth' i.e exploit the benefits system. It's basically the same mentality, but increased by the lack of self-determination the likes of the monarchy imply!
DT1, spot on!
(Nice to see a quote from the stay-make from Sandwich ---I presume most stays are now made in China nowadays?)
DT1, Paine is a fool. All monarchs have advisers, which include at least the incumbent senior minister and in our case, the Privy Council. Add that to a lifetime of experience and you have in our present monarch probably one of the most clued-up and wise monarchs ever seen.
Working hard and acheiving is no myth DT1. I began at the bottom of the pile without fancy bits of papaer to my name and through hard work, determination and a slice of luck here and there, got to acheive my career ambition. I am sure there are others equally successful who have got to the top through their own efforts despite all the prejudices one faces in the employment market.
Best of luck to all Parties and Candidates - look forward to seeing you at the count

And for those who can not make it to the Count here's the Count for you! Enjoy!!

I suspect DT1 that you will be very disappointed with the Conservative Government as they will disprove what you say, but then I suspect that you wont approve of the reforms anyway, well I hope you don't....

Surely I would be pleased if they disprove my concerns!
A bit cryptic there Barry, you are talking about the house of lords?
Sid, I'm not saying you can't work your way up, just it is hardly a merit based society we live in. People like you should be congratulated on beating the system to which I refer. However to use an another example, how much effort (if even possible) would it take for you or I to make it to the house of Lords, to help make decisions for the country? How much effort did it take the hereditary peers?
As for Paine, he uses reasonable arguments against monarchy, he was quite a good engineer too.
If the Queen is so 'wise' due to her advisors, let's just have the advisors and get rid of her.
I always raise the example of Prince Charles commenting on urban planning and architecture, probably the least qualified to do so, having never engaged with a town without 50 other people surrounding him.
'Pub as the hub'...because you always pop to the local boozer Charles. It really is laughable!
