Sadly Vic, it's only politicians, the selfish, the self-serving union bosses and hardline lefties who fail to recognise the state this country is in.
Joe Public is clued up and battening down the hatches for the inevitable cuts.
I think Sid has it in a sentence there. Us ordinary mortals know when we have to bite the bullet - it is only the people with personal axes to grind who will try to lead us in another direction. We just need to be careful that we don't let our capacity for sense blind us to any tricks slipped under the wire by the politicians while we are concentrating on survival!

count many of the business community, chnambers of commerce etc along with the unions who are most concerned that tax rises and spending cuts would damage the economy further.

Howard - the simple fact is that the economy will suffer most damage if the deficit is not properly tackled through spending cuts.
I have a chart that shows this for posting after the budget.

What a super post from John, there - absolutely spot on. I get the distinct impression that the Tory party sees UKIP as some spoilt child constantly nagging for something they won't get. But the issue won't go away just because they want it to - membership of the EU costs the UK £48m per day. PER DAY!!!!
And for that, we cow tow to our European masters for whom Great Britain is just a small island that rocks the boat over EU unity- thank God for us, I say. I see the Chancellor has announced that the department in the Treasury that existed solely to prepare the UK for entry into the Euro has been abolished in favour of something 'more profitable'; whilst I am more than delighted about that, I am astonished that the last Labour government felt it appropriate not to tell anyone that a department existed with the sole aim of further erosion of Britain and our way of life. If ever I doubted my own commitment to anti-EU politics............

Andy - to be fair we did not about that department, I posted on the forum many moons ago about it. It was a crass and stupid thing to do and how much money was wasted on 'Euro preparation' can only be guessed at.
However, chaps, we are a different generation to the one that matters, the new voters. They have grown up with us in the EU and, quite frankly, aren't so backward looking as we tend to be. I suspect a vote for IN or OUT wil lead to a massive IN.
My kids for instance, who are mid 30's, wish I'd shut up about the EU and find ways to make is work for the country rather than just bleating about something that won't ever be undone, whatever we say or think.
Maybe they are right.

I suspect you may be right, Sid, that the new generation might be pro-EU; in which case, why do successive Governments deny democracy the right to say 'No'? Might it just be that those who are so certain that a 'Yes' vote would win don't want to risk a free and open debate about the subject in case they lose?.
Barry
You might have known about that department, I didn't! I'd have been all indignant way before now if I had..........

getting back to post 45 from andy, it is not just us rocking the boat, all over western europe there is dissent.
not just ireland and denmark as it was at one time, the lisbon treaty clearly upset all those were asked to vote on it, hence they stopped asking people.
the new nations love it as they are gaining by it.
the more i listen to the language that angela merkel uses, the more i think that germany will be the first to pull out.
recent statements have referred to the future of the currency and more recently to the future of the union.
she is responding to a massive groundswell of opinion in her country that feel germany is being used as a cashcow for other nations that cannot run their economy.

It would be better for the Euro is Germany pulled out instead of Greece and other countries crashing out... But remember, the Euro was never a matter of economics, it was and is all about politics and the furtherance of the European Superstate.

I'd like to think that would happen, Barry, but sadly can't see it happening, not since the Greece bail out was financed by the Germans..........

the german press and public are livid because of the greek bail out.
they have phone ins there that are inundated with the subject blocking out any other issue.
germany is the dogs wotsits in the union, if they go everyone goes.
