the elected members of this august institution have just voted themselves an 8% pay rise, making them among the most highly remunerated councillors in the country.
how out of touch is that?

the allowance is at present approx 12 grand and will go up to above 13.
travelling costs and extra responsibility allowances are in addition to this.

and district is also an ALlowance
So, where did it say that people can administer their own pay rises and allowances? If it's possible I would rather like to vote on my own pay, please. Hands up for an 8% pay rise, anyone?

Aren't the Government voting on greatly increasing MP's pensions just now ?
They never learn do they ? I couldn't believe it.
How much more screwing the general public will there be ?

Roger the MP's have decided to abandon that plan, pressured by the current climate. In other words there is a strong chance that they would get lynched!...if they went ahead with it.
They were indeed on the verge of awarding themselves a nice new increase.
Bern rather bizarely MP's have always voted for their own pay rise, although that is a practice sure to change now with this much heralded review of the various procedures, which is currently underway. It was a farce anyway, and how it existed for so long Gawd knows...but one assumes Councils do the same thing.
Councillors dont get paid but just get allowances. The DDC guys get a good allowance but I think someone told me once that Dover Town Councillors dont get anything..but I stand to be corrected on that.
Lets look at man about town CLLR Nigel Collor.
Allowance for DDC
extra allowance for being in cabinet at DDC
Allowance added now for KCC
...so all in all not a bad little earner
But like they say in the words of that well known song
"He works hard for the money
so you better treat him right!!"

Hate to correct you (oh mighty one lol)
but town cllrs also get an allowance recently agreed and on the wall of who claimed wot just inside town council offices
Of course EVERY cllr can DECLINE the allowance in part or full if they so wish
Actually the Town councillors can claim £450 allowance bought in some years ago ( wont say who by ) but Having voted against it I decided to take it and redistribute it myself to the Town. I am sure none of you begrudge me ( oh yeh! ) but when you spend a day a week on Council business then the expenses of parking and buying stuff for events and prizes and sponsorship etc are far more. I haven't mentioned it as a recompense for salary as that is what I dont believe in.
This is a thorny subject but one which all should have a say. As a Councillor I am happy to be checked - but on the other side I also believe that I have a duty to work at the job. If I didnt then I would not claim anything. it isnt a fee!
By the way other parishes do the same ...

i doubt if 9 quid a week would merit much discussion.
i could not believe that the pension increase for mp's was only pulled yesterday.
they do not learn, do they?
every day on the news we hear of final salary pension schemes ending.

I do understand where your coming from, but because other p[arishes do it doesn't mean you have to!!!
Its one of those difficult areas,
If an allowance of some kind isn't in place we will end up with cllrs who are
business bosses who can afford time off to go to meetings etc
or
unemployed persons
or
retired persons
So its one of those thorny areas, with the present climate, wonder wot will happen

Just to put the record straight .DDC Councillors did not get an increase in their allowances this year and csbinet members took a £1000 year cut .Staff were having a pay freeze so elected member lead by excample .
Their is a panel who decide on what pay councillors should receive .A group of councillors are interviewed ansd advise of their work load .I must say they thought I was well underpaid ,however I now get a lot less and much more free time .
It is up to the individual how much time they spend and if our newly elected representatives are worth that money I hope to see a vast improvement on the state of our highways and all weeds cleared from footways.
I personally dont think a person can serve two councils but there Im only a pleb as Keith says .To do a proper job you need to be on the patch not flying to meetings all the time .
keith Im on JTB (transport ) now so have spent time going round on the buses looking at parking .

good to hear that susan, our councillors must be congratulated for their attitude.
if you get a bit short though, you can always flog the rest of the benches.
Agreed Keith, but the point I am sure we all agree on is that when anyone takes on a job as councillor or MP it shouldn't cost you.
I have a lot of sympathy with many of the claims made and none for the extravagant ones. When you run a business - or a country there is a need for expenses. small numbers become silly if we have to account for every penny as we would spend so long watching our backs and doing the sums that it would detract from the job.
Unfortunately we are now on a witch hunt and sensible provision goes out the window. I want people running this country to be moral and considerate but I dont want them to be scared to make decisions that are unpopular.
I regret that much of the recent hype will turn off those good candidates who wonder why they put up with the harrassment.
But its the world we have created......

The stupid thing is KCC workers got 1% DDC workers have been offered 0% and then KCC members vote them selves 8%.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

put simply john, kcc councillors are extracting the urine, whilst our own august councillors led by the fuhrer should be wreathed in garlands.

It was me, who aske for the £450 ayear allowance for town cllrs to help with the cost of stamps, parking, petol, to get to all the meetings, and most of all time lost at work, some of the cllrs did not have a good paid job, or no job at all, what I done was right and would do it again the full council voted on it and it was passed.
I remain yours faithfully Vic Matcham
