ROGER
Whilst i WOULDN'T want to tell you howe to riun your life, or have any disrespect for Sue.
The job with the CofC has moved on, and OK if Barryw is such a friend of yours he will fight to get you re instated, but Iv not heard him say he is to do that, nor has he said he disagrees's with he commerce decisiuon to remove you.
Your starting to sound like SUE does at times , me me me which does you no justice
Now back on the subject of the market, you don't have to be in a paid position to influence others, you still are a District cllr(i'm not aware yoyu resigned?)
And influences can be made in that direction.

Fair comment Keith, I'll try not to make any more comments on that subject.
Was you saying "wouldn't want to tell you how to ruin your life" above, or just an extra "i" in there ?

Hold on a minute there Keith .Im rarely in the public eye these days and as far as Im concerned see other thread which you are prolonging have no interest in who is Mayor .We all know its political .
Now back to the subject of this thread .I wasnt going to post on it but I understand completly what Paul is saying .
Im a good mate of Rogers however like he disagreed with me over the screen I do not think an introduction of a Saturday market will be at all helpful .
It will take the trade from a very fragile shopping centre
You can only spend your money once so if if you purchase meat, fish ,vegetables on a Saturday you are hardly likely to go to the shops which we already have in town .
The Market will not be a glorious resurrection of Dover Centre ,like Ron Dennis said to me years ago .He was not a Knight in White Armour coming to rescue Dovers economy .
What we all need to do is to support what we have .Fight for the business rates to be reduced ,clean up the empty shops etc .
Im now off to Canterbury where you can get clothes which suit the older woman .Peacocks ,Dot Perkins you can keep . .

Without taking sides here, it looks like two completely opposite opinion`s on this matter, and it will be very interesting to see what the outcome will be. Only one way to find out.

Hi,
I don't purport to be an economist. I just want to see our communities thrive. Hippyish vision, perhaps, but I make no apologies for that.

To you all.
Personally I like markets.
I just enjoy a rounded debate not a one sided one.
This is not something I am or will be involved with so I thought you ought to have the benefit of another opinion.
It is not a political or Tory opninion just a debating point.
I'll be interested to see the debate when another retail outlet goes.
Me, I'm all for competition.
You see Roger has highlighted another element of competition with the open/close Xmas shops.
Why would anyone want to take the risk of being a small High St. retailer.
No such thing as consumer loyalty for the majority!!

Thanks for the photos Colin qand your views Paul.
It is because those market stalls are here, that those people are in Dover; if we didn't have them, those people would be shopping in Morrisons and maybe never come into the town centre.
Canterbury has a very busy and successful market on two days a week and that doesn't upset their retailers; I'm sure they'd be upset if their market wasn't operating.

When did it change that competition is now seen as a threat rather than as a challenge? Everyone has different tastes and most of us like to vary our menu's so could it not be looked upon as a chance to promote a wider choice in products available?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Chris you are right of course, however, some of us are not convinced the local retailers economy is strong enough to withstand an onslaught from outside. There is some concern that we may get the opposite of what we all hope for. It is right to express those concerns.

It is right that there should be a full set of views on this and I welcome them.
I would like to say that if the expected footfall is as high as it could/should be, then that increase in footfall will spill over into greater business for the shops.
Many shops are in a parlous state now, without a market, so why not go for it ? As I said earlier, many people don't come into Dover now, they go to Canterbury, Ashford, Folkestone or Westwood Cross.
We must give people a reason to come into Dover; we must give the businesses confidence that things will get better and not give up.
Now that I have no further influence in this, I hope that who ever does, keeps a good standard of stalls and doesn't bring in any new fruit and veg stalls as we have 8 already.

I wasn't saying as a Councillor Keith, but as Dover Businesses Support Manager.
There are meetings I would go to as a Councillor and ones I would go to as a member of a (business) body - ie DBS Manager.

Like Marek I am originally from the North West, Manchester in fact, where we had several markets on different days of the week. The best one for me was at Ashton under Lyne, a small town not far from where I lived. It was a good day out, plenty of stalls, rides for the kids and a great atmosphere with the stall holders shouting out the banter to buy their wares.
The local shops were still thriving as well, why should Dover be any different ?.
Before anyone says "why don't you go back there then" I have to say I love Dover, warts and all, and have been down here for forty years. It has given me a good living, working on the ferries and the Tunnel construction, and lots of friends as well. I think that Dovorians are the most hospitable people that I have come across in all my travels around the world.

i wholeheartedly agree with your last paragraph, as an incomer myself, i find the people locally extremely friendly and helpful in the main.
you see people all the time in town giving directions to overseas visitors.
in a lot of places this does not happen.
