Deal always has something we sadly lack.

On another thread, I think it's called Pizzazz.
Deal also have a strong town and business support body.

Deal, in other words, has its act together........

Bern
Exactly

But why can Deal organise the town so well and Dover (bar a few hardworking individuals) is left to rack and ruin?.

Most people in Dover are lazy and defeatist and make no effort to do anything except wallow in beer, food and TV, in my humble opinion. Their main preoccupation is with being "hard" although they are not really even that, under the surface aggression.
Moreover it is not surprising that so few people bother to do anything. Those that do get laughed at and derided for standing up for the community. Not very encouraging.
"most people"????? I don't think so! Just most of the visible people. It seems to be a cultural thing and a wussy council mainly in the frame.

Just calling it as I see it from long experience of living here. I find it very frustrating.
I don't think there is a very well-developed culture of public spiritedness and engagement with the community here. Not unique to Dover, but Deal definitely has a better sense of community.

I have to assume Andrew does not live in Dover to make such an offensive statement. What a load of rubbish.
I bet the small minority that he describes could be said to live any town, or village come to that, even where Andrew lives.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

I do actually live in Dover and have done so 90% of my life. I am fully entitled to say what I think.
To an extent we get the town we deserve.

we have a reasonably strong community spirit where i live, a tiny minority might fit the bill of the description by andrew.

Perhaps "most people" was an overstatement. Since none of can quantify the figures, there is no point arguing about them. OK, in my opinion too many people in Dover make no effort to so much as lift a finger to do anything for the broader community and are content to live in their own little bubbles.
The very act of contributing to this forum signifies a level of engagement with the community albeit at a fringe, first level. But it's a start.
I say these things because I care about the old place and am sick of seeing it looking, in the words of the Dover Express, like "A holding bay for the Jeremy Kyle Show" and get annoyed at some people's self-centred apathy.

that applies to many towns and cities in britain.
thinking locally dover could not compete with thanet and the medway towns on that score.

Indeed it does Howard.
Yes, there are worse places but we were comparing it with Deal, which is an example to aspire to.

A few years ago, the Lonely Planet guide book ( I believe it was) did a write-up on Deal giving it a really glowing report.
It then went on to say about the ferries being only 7 miles away at "dodgy Dover"
This naturally incensed all those who had a business in Dover, especially those directly connected with tourism - the accommodation sector and the historic sites and attractions.
Moving the town forward by improving its general appearance - the buildings, litter, flowers, signage, group travel, petty crime, anti-social behaviour etc. etc. etc.
It's giving people a reason to come into town and helping them have a good experience here, is what matters.
I got into trouble for saying it before, but even though the Harbour Board and Kent Tourism via cruise conenctions, do a lot for cruise passengers/tourists, there isn't the co-ordination between the cruise terminals and the Town.
Simple things, that don't cost the Earth, should be done and there is a body now set up to do it, but not at part-time hours - it's more than full-time, much more.

Thank you Marek.
When you say why can't the Town do something about it, but it depends on who "they" are.
If the Town Council, then it depends on those they are in bed with, but it sadly won't make much difference at all; their "partners" hearts and minds are not in it, sadly it won't be me, nor ever likely to be again.
If the Chamber of Commerce, then I'd best not pass any comment at all, as even after 4 wasted months, anything I say, will be construed as sour-grapes.
I've been saying that for months Brian, but tell me who is going to do it, or at least organise and oversee it ?
