19:2738780Colin,
Did you notice if they were selling Holland's Pies ?. Being a Northern company I was hoping that they would.
Being a Mancunian I am probably biased but Holland's Meat & Potato pies are the best in the world, yummy, yummy.

13:4838834I have just been to Morrisons - great stuff!! A lovely wide selection of produce and products, a smashing cafe, and ample parking. Good luck to them - I will be using them.

15:1038909A quick look round today for the first time. Box of 40 PG tips tea bags £1.12, Tescos normal price 93p. A few other of my regular items a bit dearer here also, which has surprised and disappointed me somewhat. Looking at the crowds in there lunchtime, I just wondered where they`d all be if Morrisons wasn`t there?

13:0439212Not good news for all though. I was in TESCO @ 09.30 today (Sunday) for my usual Sunday breakfast.
Cafe and store deserted + talking to some of the staff they have had their hours halved.

13:1339214Tesco have had things there own way for too long. Because of the near-monopoly they have enjoyed for so long, they have p***ed off too many people too often; if that is now to be reflected by their customers deserting them, they deserve all they get.
I feel sorry for staff if their hours have been cut, but tbh their attitude has been half the problem.

14:4339225quite so, time they had a bit of competition.
in any business some jobs go at the same time as a rival business doing better creates jobs.

18:4839248Whilst I am not overly concerned at Tesco's problems, I am concerned that
a) the town centre was deserted today and very quiet yesterday, yet Charlton Green, mostly Morrisons, was heaving.
b) Somerfield, in particular, and the other food retailers in the town centre are also being badly affected by this
c) shop staff may well lose their jobs
Whilst I was, and am, in favour of Morrisons as I think we needed to pull people down the hill from Whitfield, the challenge now is to get these people to come into the town centre. Retailers & landlords in town, along with the DTC, DDC & Business Support Manager need to think about how this might be achieved. I would suggest some or all of the following:
a) tidy up the town centre and High Street including getting rid of all the chewing gum on the pavements
b) board out the vacant shops and use them for displaying art by local artists or school murals, perhaps a competition amongst the local schools?
c) put on events in Pencester Park, or the Market Square every weekend to attract people. How about letting local musicians, drama groups or dance troupes put on shows? Or a monthly Continental Market?
d) improve signage from Charlton Green & Charlton Centre multi-storey to let people know how to get to the town centre, perhaps getting retailers to sponsor ones that show which shops are where?

I'm working on all of those.
KCC have agreed that a 3 monthly schedule can be set up to clean the chewing gum from the pavements.
I have compiled a list (including photographic evidence) of the worst buildings in Dover Town and will shortly be submitting it to the Portfolio Holder responsible for planning (it's a planning issue ).
I am also meeting with the Mayor tomorrow (Tuesday) to discuss the best way ahead and as Phil has already stated, LRCF are also on the case.
I'm not an events Manager, but would encourage musicians/buskers etc. to perform along Cannot Street and Biggin Street and there are usually quite a few events in Pencester during the summer months.
I am actively working on bringing a proper market to Dover - in the Market Square, Cannon Street and Biggin Street (depending on how many stall-holders I can get).
I must admit that signage from Charlton Centre/Green into Town hadn't crossed my mind, partly because I class The Charlton Centre as part of the Town and I doubt if there are many "strangers" who go to the Charlton Centre and not know about Market Square - but of course there may be now.
Signage showing what businesses are at the other end would cost quite a bit and I doubt if the businesses could afford a contribution.
I'm also working on an updated Discover Dover leaflet to try and bring the French in Nord Pas de Calais, to Dover.
There's a whole range of things I'm working on, because there's a whole range of things that need doing.
Roger

11:0239306I have always shoped at Morrinsons when I went out of town, but please remember that Tesco is a British company and all the others are not, and a British company doing well all around the world and I hope that will be so for many years,so please do not stop shoping there but now you can shop at both.
What we will be doing is one week at Tesco and the other at Morrinsons the last thing Dover needs is to get one new store .and the other one close down so please where you can use both of them.Thank you.

13:2239321tesco is not a dover store though, they are up at whitfield.
they took a lot of business from dover town over the years, what goes around, comes around.
talking to people who have used them regularly, no-one seems to be shedding a tear for them.

00:1839395Vic check your facts: Morrisons is a British company having been founded by William Morrison in Bradford in the late 19th Century, it is currently a quoted plc on the London Stock Exchange. Equally Somerfield/Co-Op is a British company too.
I suspect that there will be a "honeymoon" period of 3-4 weeks where lots of people try out Morrisons and then their previous shopping patterns will start to return and we will see normality return with a more even pattern of trade between Tesco & Morrisons; sadly I do think Somerfield will see significantly reduced trade.
Roger, that is all great news and I wish you every success with your efforts.
