A small point AndyPol, you also are selective and try to twist our comments to suit your agenda. These people are not wanted legal migrants they are entering the country illegally paying a lot of money to the ruthless people providing these dangerous crossings.
How can anyone respect the French officialdom that allow over 1000 people to cross in one day, I am sure our officials would not have ignored that number leaving our side of the Channel.

I really wish I could say more, so if any of you are still alive when I hopefully make it to retirement and are still reading this thread, I'll come back and say it, but of course I would then be as outdated as others quoted in this thread...
I would say I'd retire from this thread, but I fear I'd just not be able to stop myself, so I won't promise that.
Meanwhile, I hope you all enjoy seeing screenshots of boats moving around just doing their job, pontificating about what you don't know and think you do, how you all would have fixed it back in 1896, and spouting on about it never happened in your day, etc...

More uninformed comment from people who don't have a clue what's going on. Frontex this time.
'EU’s external borders: Increased number of crossings on the Central Mediterranean. In the first seven months of this year, there were about 155 090 irregular entries to the EU. This represents an increase of 86% compared with the same period of last year'.

Meanwhile in the USA illegals picked up DOWN to
181,552 last

Border Force sources said most of yesterday’s arrivals were Albanian, continuing the trend that has seen more than 5,000 people from the country arrive in small boats this year.
(In 2020, Albanians were reportedly the largest foreign national group in UK prisons with over 1,500 inmates, representing roughly 10% of the foreign prison population in the UK, rising from 2% in 2013.)

Astonishing visa / asylum figures issued by Govt today:
330k+ work visas (+72% on 2019)
480k+ study visas (+71% on 2019)
75k asylum claims by main applicants and dependants (fifth highest ever and most since 2002)
230k granted entry for resettlement (Ukraine, HK, Afghanistan)

Work visas figures not particularly astonishing given that the UK is short of workers

So just over 1 million people legally granted entry to work or study in the UK, given that we have left the EU and short of labour, I'd say that's quite good.
It's not illegal to claim asylum so I'm unsure what is shocking about these figures? 75k doesn't seem huge in a country of 67 million?
I'd also be grateful if someone can put me straight about how this is relevant to a Dover forum? Look forward to the comments....

Healthy discussion on current events on any forum is what keeps them ticking over and interesting for others who are aware that there is a world outside of their area which affects everyone.
Too many biased opinions and gripes, however, do sometimes impinge on what should be interesting comments for many others.

Yup.
Is the UK Border Force Fit for Purpose: A Discussion with The Hon. Alexander Downer
Monday, 5th September 2022
6pm-7pm BST
SPEAKER:
The Hon. Alexander J G Downer AC
Executive Chair of the International School for Government, King’s College London
Australia’s longest-serving Minister for Foreign Affairs (1996 to 2007)
Former Australian High Commissioner to the UK
IN CONVERSATION WITH:
Dr Stepan Stepanenko
Research Fellow, The Henry Jackson Society
The UK Border Force has come under fire in light of the increasing number of Channel crossings made by migrants and the measures around the detention of those seeking asylum. The Home Secretary, Priti Patel, has faced criticism on what some see as her indecisiveness in acting on information that would ease the pressure on the Border Force and provide a more efficient service that would allow the Border Force to act better in the interests of national security.
In order to discuss this situation and to ascertain the possibilities for Border Force reform, The Henry Jackson Society is pleased to welcome The Hon. Alexander J G Downer AC. Mr Downer is the author of the recent
independent review of Border Force, commissioned by the Home Secretary and published in July 2022. The review presented findings on the capability of the Force to deal with present pressures on the UK border and offered advice on the training, structure, oversight, leadership and external partnership among other suggestions. Mr Downer will talk about his review and the state of the UK Border Force.

Given it is being hosted & run by HJS I suspect I know the course it will steer & the range of solutions they are likely to come up with, given their recent output on immigration.

Lovely picture, not too sure if it's aimed at me directly, but kind of indicates the level of politeness on here, a wonderful advert for Dover!

I was just wondering if you'd bump this up the forum. I know of many Poles that have returned to the country they fled from for a holiday, times change.
However, can't you give it a rest just for a few days whilst there are other, very important historical, once in a lifetime things going on in people's lives?
