Today the Port does us proud again with two fantastic whoppers in again...the legend in its own time..Carnival Legend, and almost equally striking, the Stella Artois. No just kidding there, did you spot that..really its the AIDA STELLA.
Unfortunately due to heavy mist again no pictures from me alas for the moment...but will hopefully get something later if things pick up weatherwise.( We did of course have pictures of same earlier in the thread )

Extra bit :There are two coach loads of foreign schoolkids staying at the Premier Inn. Loads of kids...never seen so many kids in one spot at one time, not for a long time anyway. There they were last evening in the misty conditions going around the seafront in groups with their notebooks checking out and making notes on all the historical seafront monuments. The statues..Rolls, Webb, Channel Dash, Merchant Navy, Herald of Free Enterprise Garden..heartening to see education in progress. They are about twelve and probably French. here are a couple of pictures taken a day or two ago showing it in glorious full bloom at the moment. it has turned out to be a lovely tribute garden. The young students mentioned above will have seen it in great shape.

As Kevin says there..further lifting took place last evening as well. The great beasts were on the way over to the western end when summer arrived at a quarter to four..it went again by 4.15 and the gloom returned, but while the sun shone i got these ones...making hay, GPS Apollo and GPS Atlas with the Carnival Legend...
Interesting bit of info from Vince there saying they cost £25,000 a day each..wow!

I was up at a sprightly 6 am, did several laps of the harbour jogging at full pace ( !! ) but todays ships were already in situ... they are coming in ever earlier. Both Sagas today..Ruby and Sapphire. Familiar friends.

And a friend of mine from Ashford took a visit to Dover Castle and the seafront yesterday and said how fantastic both places were, they visited the seafront years and years ago and said it was dreary looking, but now looks much better and they enjoyed Dover castle

The late evening departure a day or two ago of the Aida Stella above.. meant to put this one up earlier but forgot the blighter. Last ray of a late watery sun catches the ship outside the harbour as it turns to head south..south, where its all warm and balmy. The ship looks to have a full contingent on board.
And now yesterday evenings departure of the Saga Sapphire. Seen here as it hits the open sea which was a tad choppy on departure. Colours were good which may be heralding the arrival of a bit of better weather.

Sulphur emissions in Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) such as the Dover Strait are due to be reduced to 0.1% under legislation requiring this to be done by 2015. Have just been involved in taking back pressure readings of the main engine exhausts for this project, the alternatives being examined are fitting exhaust scrubbers or converting to LNG.
Outside the SECAs, sulphur emissions will also have to be reduced. This legislation is being challenged by the world's shipping companies as the timetable is very short and cost is eye wateringly expensive. Total cost to world shipping is estimated in excess of $500 billion over the coming years.

Ah now ..there is a bit of added old day chuzzpah to be had when ones sees a touch of smoke billowing out of a funnel. I remember the ould steam packet companies plying their trade on the turbulent Irish Sea...The Isle of Man Steam Packet company...now there's a name to conjure with. And Sealink...none of these were too shy about billowing out black smoke with gusto..and I'm still here in roaring rosy health....cough!
As you all will know, yesterday was a summers day, yes a real one. Much of the town sauntered down onto the beach to enjoy all the jollities of summer.. ice creams, coca cola, crisps, and glorious sunshine. The only thing we dont have is candy floss but who knows maybe in time...lol!
Saturday morning is the great morning for swimmers..gathering now in big numbers..here are a couple of pics of the swim fraternity..not from yesterday but a week or so back.

and of course the yachting guys were busy too enjoying the latest burst of summer on friday evening..couldnt waste all that good weather and there was a wee bit of a breeze too..hold on to yer tiller..!! Ive cheated a bit with this one but am not saying how..
Again on friday evening in continuing very nice sunshine, I spotted this one below way out in the channel. Visibility was a bit hazy so images a bit weak but Its none other than the 120,000 ton Celebrity Eclipse making its giant way down the channel to the rival destination.. Southampton. Its a fair way out as you can see, with the cliffs of the French Caps looming large.
Note how the sea is 'lake placid' calm. Rare.

This is one of the motor launches which operated out of Dover as part of No.52 ML flotilla, manned by the Royal Norwegian Navy. They operated at night during moonless periods in conjunction with the Royal Navy No.50 ML flotilla to lay mines in German convoy routes and to block enemy port entrances between Zeebrugge and Boulogne. Very dangerous work with the ever present threat of German E-boats. (See book entitled "Dover at War 1939-45" by Roy Humphreys).
One of the Motor Torpedo Boats (MTB's) which operated with the RN 11th MTB flotilla based at HMS Wasp in Dover, and manned by the Royal Norwegian Navy for a time at Felixstowe, has been preserved at IWM Duxford. The Coastal Forces Heritage Trust hope to move her to the Historic Naval Base collection at Portsmouth.

Under Otto Weddigen this U-boat was responsible for sinking the three elderly cruisers HMS Aboukir, Cressy and Hogue in the space of one hour in 1914. Known as the "Live-Bait" squadron due to their vulnerability they had been sent to patrol in the Broad Fourteens off the coast of Holland. Less than a month later, U9 sank another cruiser, HMS Hawke. Together with the many merchant ships U9 sank during the war, this vessel was responsible for the loss of many thousands of lives.
These photos were kindly sent to me by Maggie and Simon of the Dover War Memorial Project some years ago. Here is their description:
"U9 survived the war and was surrendered to the Royal Navy. On its way from Harwich to Morecambe for breaking, it began taking in water. On 13th March 1919 it came into Dover Harbour and sank. Three weeks later, on a high tide, two lighters succeeded in raising it. As the tide fell, U9 was left high and dry on the sands by Waterloo Crescent. To Dover, the town whence U9 had sent so many men on their last journeys, the submarine, on its own last journey, now returned. Perhaps it was a fitting tribute. Pumping out the remaining water, dockyard employees effected repairs to render U9 once more seaworthy. A fortnight later, the submarine was refloated, and eventually docked at the Camber, by the Eastern Arm of the harbour."
