and now...
60 years of serving our ferry customers...from Dover Harbour Board
30th June 2013 marked the 60th anniversary of the opening of what can be described as the modern ferry terminal and the drive-on drive-off era. The terminal has been serving ferry customers for as long as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has sat on the throne.
The ferry terminal has played an incredibly important role for the nation during that time, now handling £80 billion of trade every year.
In the first year, it was anticipated that we would handle about 10,000 vehicles per year. In fact 10 times that amount materialised. Amazingly, today we welcome around 12 million customers travelling in 4.5 million vehicles each year.
Recently, some cupcakes were seen making their way around the Port in order to produce a short film to mark the 60th anniversary and to bring all parts of the Port community together to mark the occasion. May we recommend the film to you, which is on YouTube [URL]

It is a light-hearted, fun and celebratory film, but it really does illustrate the incredible diversity of the people and organisations that make up the Port of Dover, but also the team spirit that is both essential and self evident in what makes this special place such a success story.

Thanks to DHB for all the above..a heck of a lot of work goes into keeping the Port in top condition and fully operational. Last week we featured heavily those massive floating cranes. Today we feature another one down at the same pier location. But this time a land based one...and very big massive size too. Size is everything..when it comes to lifting devices.
Yes a big crane indeed..to show scale see the normal sized one directly behind. Picture taken last evening.
Of course managing the Port might be a tad easier in sunshine conditions as we are experiencing at the moment..but its not always like that and then sinews get stretched. This picture below is not from deep midwinter..no sir..its from flaming June a few short weeks ago.. ruddy 'ell
There you are...nobody sleeps on this watch...the ups and downs of port life.
