08:5527904Bern the idea was silly when we have schools which specialise in Art .The £50.000could have been used for more flowers and Howard ,seating .Shops given money to spruce their shop fronts up .Employ another body to clean up the litter .Ensure notice boards to advertise events are visual .
One of the things the Silly artists did was to get old people knitting squares ??
They employ people to come up with silly ideas .Roger ,myself and many other councillors could do more if we were listened to ..Instead we have to bring politics into it and have a debate ,a vote and everyone gets silly and nothing is done .

09:3627908I agree to get schools involved but there is always room for proper artists to be involved. I do think this could be managed better at times as I don't think those making decisions really 'get' what they are trying to achieve.
If you look at Folkestone, they are very clear in what they are doing with art in the town. I don't think we should try and replicate this but we should have a clearer focus.
Sue, just because you don't like something or understand it, you shouldn't just dimiss them. I think watercolours of Crabble corn mill and oil paintings of cats in baskets are silly but I'm sure these are right up your street!

10:4027909Water colours yes but not cats .In Age Concern we have some excellent work on display created by students of Astor College .Very modern but it cheers the place .It did not cost £50,000
Actually I have a very good eye for Art .
Just pointing out that money which we are short of could be put to better use .

10:4827910I originally posted about the £50k grant available for High Streets but as of yet no-one has come forward to
1. acknowledge that DDC even knew about the scheme
2.Was an application submitted
3. and if not why not.
Sue
Maybe you could advise please.

16:5527915how does one have a good eye for art?
it takes so many different forms.
some people go for constable, turner and the like, others for tracey emin.
not very similar are they.

18:5527925Interesting debate so far.
A friend of mine is an artist(the painting kind lol)
He had loads of paintings in his house, from the lovely paintings of the castle and other famousa places in Dover realy good to.
He also does what he calls MODERN ART which he prefers(and i think are crap)
but like others have said its about choice and everyone thinks differently.
I must be an old fuddy duddy but I prefer a nice painting that shows something like lovely Dover.
not something that looks like it was thrown on the paper lol
