PS. Noting that you consulted Wikipedia to obtain a definition of a sardine - slightly odd - I decided to return the favour and see what happened when I put Jan Higgins into the search. Result was “nothing” which nearly sums it up for me.

It will be interesting to see whether the evidence has developed over the recent trial sufficient to lay charges. My understanding is that it remains an open file. If it proceeds, sadly , i suspect the details will be depressingly familiar to those of us who know Charles. His defence strategy was appalling.

I, nor anyone here would know if his ex wife knew he was guilty
Only when she saw case notes and his tweets to a 20 year old did she drop him
She defended him up to that time as he was denying it and she presumably had no reason to think otherwise.
Had she attempted to change his evidence she would also be before the courts

I think it’s fairly likely that any custodial sentence would be suspended. After all, he’s lost his marriage and both political and legal careers as well as his reputation. What would be the point of further punishment, other than to satisfy the appetites of the sanctimonious newspaper editors?

Those events aren’t punishments. They are the outcome of his behaviour.
If you sexually assault someone you are at severe risk of prison. Remember all his protests of innocence etc and forcing those young women to go to trial ...
I know you seem to like the guy. But surely you can see that his crimes deserve real sanction.

After the events the BIG mistake Charlie made was lying to the police in his statement. This is why he will get a custodial sentence.

Why would that have a bearing on the judge's choice of sentence?

Capt Haddock - the big mistake was assaulting two women. Shoving your hand down someone’s bra and between their legs ...multiple offences... trying to stitch them up with colleagues, the pay off, abusing the position you were elected to etc etc...forcing the trial, no remorse...the lying was just the mark of who he was. Your post #825 didn’t age well. He was a predatory self serving abuser who deserves no pity, just contempt. The local conservative association should have a long hard look at themselves and their defence of him. I’m saddened But not surprised that there has be nothing from them.
